This is not a comment on tax, but the fact that successive governments have simply decided to raise min wage rather than fixing structural issues with our economy as a way of alleviating people's burdens, and that has led to something that looks suspiciously like wage compression.

Leaving this here as the most concise explanation of the observation being made here and muting! bsky.app/profile/jhol...

If public services are crumbling and the only lever you are willing to pull to help the low earners is "raise min wage" it would appear you create massive inflationary pressures that all but erase the real terms increase, make middle earners relatively worse off, and still have shit public services

Been thinking about this since and decided to have more of a look, and, well, shit. Min wage to higher tax bracket ratio in 2006: £9,200/£33,000 (0.28) Min wage to higher tax bracket ratio in 2016: £14,200/£43,000 (0.33) Min wage to higher tax bracket ratio in 2026: £27,500/£50,000 (0.55)

Not to open oneself up to accusations of being right-wing, but a minimum wage of nearly £30,000 a year and a higher rate tax bracket of £50,000 does look a little off

We appear to have sleepwalked into massive wage compression over the last decade and it seems (from someone who worked in politics 2018-2025) to have largely passed our political and editorial class by?

Definitely something left-leaning voices need to get out in front of rather than letting the right frame min wage/NLW exactly how they want to at somepoint between now and the next GE. bsky.app/profile/jhol... bsky.app/profile/jhol...

On the upside, we are now very very close to fixing the perennial problem of "the squeezed middle" by one more economic shock simply eliminating them all together.

Driving through High Peak is giving me the unbearable urge to settle down and start a family, absolutely gorgeous vibes

Thirties are a lot of heteronormative biological instincts battling it out with debauched queer impulses thus far, God I'd have loved the 1950s

Sizeable swing to the far right in every possible second round head to head since people started looting shit and burning down town halls, who could have seen this coming

Bit my tongue at a lot of otherwise sensible people justifying this shite or cheering it on on socials the last week and honestly how fucking dumb can you be. This ain't a fucking larp

Coming round in hospital to find out I lived and The Canary died. Can I get a "fuck yeahhhh"

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

It feels like something from a different age now but The Canary drove certain people insane in the 2010s. (I wrote about them lots, I don't think they liked me, but they were very open in their 'well if the right are twisting facts in an online fight-to-the-death we might as well join in' attitude.)

Guy waiting for his haircut was eyeing me up via the mirror in my barbers whilst I was in the chair. Didn't think much of it till I left and saw that he'd messaged me on grindr 😭

Having a minor surgery under general on Monday and so climbing a mountain this weekend to distract from it lmao

If you think a distinct sub category of human exists because some medieval warlords agreed that the border of England should be on the River Tweed, you are, Im afraid, an absolute maniac bsky.app/profile/theh...

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

Pro-Palestinian protesters gather outside City Hall to call out Mayor Zohran Mamdani for what they see as his betrayal of the movement. "Mayor Mamdani, you can't hide we charge you with genocide" was a chant that just rang out.

A factoid: the leaders of 7 out of the 8 largest Westminster parties have been elected under non-FPTP systems: Burnham (SV), Badenoch (MMP), Flynn (STV), Farage (CLPR), Robinson (STV), Polanski (MMP), ap Iorwerth (MMP). The only party whose leader has no experience outside FPTP is... the Lib Dems.

I think the big risks are all to 'the Greens generally' not Polanski himself. The Greens, correctly IMV, fought a positive campaign on a 'vote Green for a better class of backbencher' - there is some grumbling internally that they should have been more negative, which would have hurt them.

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

All the breathless "Is it over for Zack Polanski??" stuff this morning feels like wishcasting to me. Two thirds of the membership joined under this leadership, removing him would take a super majority on the party council, and also the result was... fine? He's going nowhere.

Hesgeth will be the fucking lunatic behind this, but the only reason it can happen is because Trump is spiritually Saudi
