What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

A rare solo #NobelPrize in physics goes to neutrino scientist Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin”. Full coverage here: physicsworld.com/a/francis-ha... 🧪⚛️

The lake surface got still on the morning of 8/14, perfect for making a star trail image with reflections! The bright trails on the right are the Pleiades and Hyades, center trails from Perseus. The patch of short streaks are satellites glinting earthshine. There are a few meteors. #astrophotography

MLS is reportedly planning a major playoff shakeup for 2027. 20 teams, one combined table, and a "double chance" round for the top 8 seeds modeled on Australian Rules Football's system. I mocked up how the new MLS playoff system could work 👇 (Reporting via @mlsist.bsky.social)

The home field thing matters a lot, but this the first time the USMNT has won two games in the group since 1930 and the first time we've reached six points in the group (wins were 2 points in 1930).

There is a lot of “Paraguay isn’t very good” talk. Full stop. Under Alfaro, they lost just once in WCQ and went 9 straight without defeat. They beat URG, Brazil, & Argentina. They were one of the best defensive teams in the 🌎. Paraguay isn’t bad. #USMNT made them look bad.

I'm considering adding a daily game to Whereabouts (NOT to replace the learning focus). If you're interested in play testing a daily game (think Wordle but for geography) DM me or email trey@whereabouts.earth. I'd love feedback from others before I settle on the exact shape.

Today, I saw this 1775 document: a letter directing the people of Massachusetts to make 13,000 coats for the colony's soldiers. This copy was for Stoughtonham [Sharon]. The archivists @bpl.boston.gov helped me check under the cloth sample to see if the walnut brown color had faded. It had not!

For everyone wondering when the lunar flyby will be and how you can follow along, it looks like NASA will have live coverage starting at 1 pm ET Monday on YouTube/NASA+

Took me a while to track it down but for all the camera nerds asking the same question I did - high res version complete with EXIF data is here: images.nasa.gov/details/art0... It was taken with a Nikon D5 with 14-24mm f2.8 lens, 1/4 sec at f4, ISO 51200

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕

Got my first bag of potato chips in months. Cracked it open. The first chip out of the bag was... soggy? The second chip was almost fungal. Baffled, I explored the bag and discovered AN ENTIRE POTATO. Unsliced, brined, like a wad of seasoning juice. It had survived, and now was juicing the chips.

I need you to all understand this is the curling equivalent of a benches clearing brawl with even the goalies fighting at center ice. Truly have never seen either one of these guys so mad before.

You may find this map shocking. The crazy imbalance even surprised me! It’s the ratio of record highs vs record lows in each city since 2020. That’s right, in Miami there have been 115 daily record highs, but only 1 record morning low! Phoenix: 138 to 0!… 1/

Scrolling through the photos of Pam Bondi's "Minnesota rioters," it's just hero after hero. Every photo includes a cowardly DHS agent with their back to the camera. Bondi thinks she's going to win the propaganda war with this shit, but it's never been more clear that they're losing.
