Every mid-sized Michigan city is surrounded by a Taxcheat Charter Township with the worst exurban development ever -- and all the businesses. And then we wonder why so many parts of Michigan suck.

gotta say i'm loving our *checks graph* zero quality of life here in Detroit Michigan USA

Imagine creating metrics that spit out this garbage and not questioning your methodology.

how can this gas station be leaving drivers with "no alternative" but to pay up?? are they coercing people to purchase gas by force?

Lady Haha@lensman23.bsky.social

A gas station off I-75 in Detroit is charging $6.09 per gallon — more than a dollar above the state average — leaving drivers frustrated and, in some cases, with no alternative but to pay up. The full story at the link in the comments. www.wxyz.com/news/gas-hit...

My contribution to the helmet discourse is to note that there is a strong inverse correlation between helmet use and cycling. There is no real-world evidence that you can convince lots of people to ride bikes and wear helmets. God bless you for trying, but I don’t think it will work.

Re-enacting Memory: 2012 at Cardiff Castle commemorating the capture of Detroit. The 41st Regiment, one of the antecedents to the Royal Welsh, was the primary British regiment at the capture of Detroit in 1812.

dan gilbert, best known for completely screwing up the alignment of the QLine streetcar against the wishes of the public, will now be the grand marshal of the thanksgiving parade

i (civil servant) have never even heard of the civil service commission lol

What up Detroit? Today I’m live reporting the Civil Service Commission . I’m sorry I’m running a little bit behind. But we are about to get started. I’m walking into the building now.!!!

this article accurately nails the problem: "Stores need customers". Somehow, it doesn't seem to mention the obvious remedy of attracting more residents.

This post is unavailable.

today's discourse reminding of the 2018 gubernatorial primary, where Shri won the City of Detroit over both Whitmer and El-Sayed. But nobody was panicking then that Whitmer was in trouble with Black voters.

this is not true. there was no conspiracy. it didn't matter whether the streetcars were publicly owned (seattle, detroit) or private (los angeles, atlanta). a thread (because i wrote a whole-ass book on this): 1/?

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

Unpopular opinion. even if automakers did “take the streetcars from Detroit” (highly debatable!), that’s not an excuse for 75 years of inaction. it’s a ridiculous story to keep leaning on and lets the entire political class and electorate off the hook for their poor choices

Detroit should probably be doing this, but with closer to a million.

Cincinnati has developed a Climate Migration Readiness Plan to absorb as many as 525,000 newcomers by 2050. It calls for building much denser housing, expanding public transit and decreasing the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.

the hours of operation for the gordie howe bride multi-use path are out! and they're predictably terrible. 8am to 8pm and you have to be on the bridge 1 hour before it closes. so at the bridge by 7pm. so functionally you can't go to windsor for anything but the earliest of dinners/events

and it barely has any parking for bicycles

Capitol Park exemplifies the power of the 1807 Judge Woodward Plan for #Detroit. Its triangular form, framed by compatible mid- and high-rise buildings, creates exceptional enclosure and identity. Angled streets generate picturesque views. It’s a destination for downtown workers and residents.

Piggybacking off this to ask: What are people’s favorite Detroit street names? There are so many good ones but my top 2 are Ironsides and Regular. We might name the kitten Conant (A street I lived off of, named for a prominent abolitionist who advocated for Black people to be able to own homes).

Just saw a guy park a cement mixer in a bus stop and walk into a Metro by T-Mobile store. Sometimes the issue in NYC is that we haven’t carefully considered the needs of working people who need to drive to make this city run. But sometimes it’s just that we let people do whatever.
