It's so weird how most US cities are run by like,, a version of the Urban Growth Machine that's somehow also nimby now? Like they'll support extremely dubious public private partnerships for sports stadiums, and want to legalize gambling for the tax revenue, but housing is too far

Future generations will never know the experience of going on stack overflow and have someone be extremely helpful in the most hostile possible way. All their answers will come from a pleasant bot.

Yeah this is obviously the point of the decor. It's not offensive to point it out because that's what they're going for.

i’m a moderate: Cheesecake Factory food is aight to good and they’re super in on the joke about the decor being over the top

Okay to be fair I think it's less "people were mean" and more "the browsers said they'd no longer trust us".

Phillip Carter@phillipcarter.dev

I am sorry but this is the funniest outcome. They ragequit the CA business because people were mean to them on social media loooooool emudhra.com/en/press-rel...

The thing that's really getting me is the people who think that AI companies have a mission in opposition to the Internet Archive. Do they know what the Internet Archive is?? I'm pretty sure they'd broadly be in agreement on copyright law.

If AI was used to notice that the private key was 4 then I'm going right back to trusting that cert. Principles are principles.

This is an absolutely astounding press release from eMudhra. No apology, a suggestion that the researcher who found their private keys must have used AI, and an attempt to shift blame to auditors... wow. emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-statement-distrust-global-tls-intermediate-root-ca

Need a MLB player to transition and then show up to t-girl baseball. I feel like that would be really funny.

Watching the Michigan governor debate and it's driving me nuts how both of them support suspending gas taxes. This is bad policy! And also it just isn't that much money! Like maybe it'd save someone $10 on a tank of gas but $10 is not... that much money.

Spending like five minutes debating a policy that'd leave us with no money for roads to save people like $10. C'mon.

Guess I have another reason to move to Seattle: I'd have a good football team to root for.

Since it's spooky season, keep in mind that if you want to scare someone in local government, you can just walk up to them and whisper "unfunded mandate" in their ear. Works every time.

Why do Monday night football games always go late when I'm trying to go to bed early? Ugh

Kinda absurd that RCS requires both parties to be online at the same time. You know, texting, famously a method for synchronous communication only.

Was Google really incapable of coming up with something better? Even XMPP has a solution to this problem. And I never praise XMPP.

As someone who doesn't live in NYC my primary experience of Columbus Day nowadays is "people arguing about whether we should have Columbus Day". I feel like the holiday is pretty dead.

This is absurd. Twitter is far worse now than prior to Musk's takeover, even if you ignore how the site's demographics have changed. Far more arbitrary suspensions and now you basically need to use a mobile phone to sign up, which is ridiculous.

I hate how there are two data structures in programming that are both referred to as "heap" and you're just sorta expected to know they are unrelated. Come onnnnnnnnn.

Feel like there's a pattern that goes like this 1. Democrat is running competitively in a very red area 2. Republicans run a bunch of "this Democrat is extremely pro-trans" attack ads 3. Democrat responds with an ad like "Republicans are lying about me supporting this to distract from real issues"

People on here only see the Democrat's ad, and not the overwhelming contexts of the Republican ads it's responding to. So they think that the Democrat losing for having the gall to run such an ad would make people think "transphobia doesn't help you win elections" when in reality it's the opposite!

Conservative government of Alberta is preempting Edmonton, requiring the city to: —Reverse the city's 2024 change allowing small-scale apartment buildings to be built citywide. Change resulted in a building boom: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... —Restore parking requirements, which city eliminated in 2020

Honestly I feel like this is worse than Doug Ford with bike lanes. Why are Canadian premiers like this?

That isn't unprincipled! The actual results of policy are what matter.

Michael DeMoor@michaeldemoor.bsky.social

I don’t want to be so unprincipled as to make my opinion depend solely on whether the result of the action is a policy that I approve of. So does that mean I have to either swallow my substantive objections and admit the province has every right to mess with Edmonton’s zoning or bike policy? Or…

That said higher-level planning is probably on-net better, even if provinces like Ontario or Alberta will screw things up.

Someone should do a study of the politics of local/regional subreddits. I feel like they tend to skew a bit towards the center compared to the actual politics of the place, but it varies.

Communities like r/kansas or r/ohio are very liberal, whereas subreddits for places like the Bay Area, Seattle, or NYC are much more politically diverse.

Every time a politician proposes a gas tax holiday I become a bit more deranged. Stop proposing it! It is never a good idea!

I understand that this probably works to win votes, so I'm really more disappointed in the voters for buying it.
