The reason Obama used water from the river for the reflecting pool and not city water is because city water is treated with orthophosphates, which is food for algae, causing massive blooms that produce cyanotoxins that kill wildlife.

Fellow phycology nerd here. The Atlantic published an article that identified Scenedesmus as the agal species plaguing the pool. This would be a green, not blue-green algae.

In the past, the National Park Service had people on staff with this expertise. Then Elon Musk DOGEd them. In fact, there are tens of thousands of positions that require similar technical expertise that are no longer filled. Our entire government is running like the Reflecting Pool, now.
