Jingles for board games were of course a function of tv advertising aimed at kids, but the thing people sometimes don't realize is the degree to which game design itself - and the trend of 3D plastic toy games - was dictated by the needs of TV advertising & shelf space.

What's some cool literature (i.e. fiction!) in either post-colonial, indigenous, or afro-futurist traditions that engage either with apocalypses or the climate crisis?

Continuing development on Painkillers, this week I finally ripped out some things I've been clinging to that were bogging the game down. Most of them were relics of past iterations of the design that added to the model but perhaps kept the higher level argument from shining through.

Cregger's Resident Evil is a good example of "Fast Body Horror." In the 80s, a lot of Body Horror was "slow" because in order to execute a special effect, there was one gimmick per shot, so transformation sequences had many cuts and emphasized the mechanics of the gimmick.

I enjoyed Resident Evil (especially Abrams' performance), and I'm looking forward to more from Cregger, but I think this is basically correct as an analysis of the limitations of "fast body horror". Sometimes, maybe even often, practical constraints can make creative work better!

so I do think alignment is a real problem, but I would turn that around and say it doesn’t mean the companies aren’t liable, it’s that they should be held *strictly* liable. treat AI development, testing, and deployment as an ultrahazardous activity

I do think you basically charge a few of them with the cybercrimes they're committing and the "alignment" problem does suddenly start to disappear.

Very nice to hear a sane voice from Piddington. Serious respect to this woman, who is apparently already being othered by more bigoted villagers.

New ‘How to Play’ day! I can’t recommend many games to introduce somebody to historical games more than Baltic Empires. The simplicity of this epic game’s mechanics and flow make it a great entry point into wargames. A brilliant design by Brian Asklev, check it out here: youtu.be/49-uZQCmz4g?...

Mind blown to discover that Chumbawumba's "We Don't Go To God's House Anymore" was written in collaboration with Alabama 3, who released the very similar sounding "U Don't Dans 2 Tekno" the year before. It makes sense that they were part of the same scene, but I'd never associated them before.
