RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Issue 23 of my newsletter, This, Not That, is out, and it's got three Halloween-themed recommendations: A horror short (which is a candy commercial, but is really good despite), a long short story about a weird dollhouse; and the precursor to the songs "Werewolf Watusi" and "Blood Bank Blues."

When my midwestern grandmother died, I rummaged around her house full of bric-a-brac and junk, completely stuck on what to take as a memento. I ended up with this:

Communication tech: I remember my dad being gone for work for like five months and we got to talk to him only occasionally, and once we missed a call and had to wait another week. Wild to think of now.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Deep in the Mandela Effect subreddit to lurk about the debate if the phrase “bucket list” had existence before the goddamn movie.

I arrived an hour early after misinterpreting my friend’s vague time proposal for our afternoon coffee date. In other words, I couldn’t see the four-ish for the three.

Funnest horror I’ve seen in ages is Dark Night of the Scarecrow, where a gaggle of good ol’ boys lynch a disabled man and then get methodically revenged by his ghost using farming equipment.

Got a pretty sad email that the Phoenix Symphony is cancelling the rest of its season after next month. I have some great memories of seeing that symphony as a young person.

Emanuel Ax performing Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto when I was high school! It was right after senior prom so I wore my rental tux. A great memory.

With the election looming, the GOP is calling in the big guns. Which means having a megachurch freak named Timmy dispatch an army of walleyed 23yo home-school casualties with YouTube diction to opposing candidates' rallies, where they will demand those candidates reject and denounce the WNBA.

Before demonitization I made between 3/4 thousand dollars a year from streaming, now its about 1,200$ annually. When you only make about a thousand dollars a month income, that kind of difference really matters!

It’s no one’s fault for casting him, but seeing Fred Willard turn up in the first act of Salem’s Lot really took me out of the mood lol
