4 more than a decade, The Fur-Bearers has called for stronger regulations, including mandatory warning signs, larger distances between traps and public areas, a ban on trapping in provincial parks, identification tags on all traps to support enforcement, and mandatory reporting when pets are caught.

One body blow after another from this government; and the lack of transparency is now the norm.

Canada's Species at Risk Act is weak compared to ESL in other countries. it also has no legal deadline for the feds to do anything following assessment of endangerment by COSEWIC. Often, the federal gov't just does nothing, so species at risk are never legally listed www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

cbc.caIs a legal loophole undermining Canada's Species at Risk Act? | CBC NewsA new study finds a legal gap in Canada's Species at Risk Act can leave species waiting years for protection, with 153 of 288 cases overdue and still unresolved as of January 2025.

14 bears have been killed by government-endorsed hunters in Alberta. 🐻 We have no idea why. In July 2024, Alberta’s Wildlife Management Responder Network was announced and promoted as a way to “protect Albertans’ lives and livelihoods.” →

Things I was frightened of as a child: Our basement. Absolutely terrifying if I was the last one down there. My mom finding out I didn’t like church. Big dogs (who could have predicted I’d own a Great Dane as an adult!)

Good news is good news so it's welcomed, but let's look at the long-term trend. Nowhere near complete recovery, just over half the stock before the collapse. Shifting baseline strikes again. 🧪 cdnsciencepub.com/doi/10.1139/...

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Officials at the Coal Valley mine in Alberta argue their operation isn’t as environmentally destructive as other coal mines. To prove it, they invited The Narwhal for a tour. Here’s a rare glimpse inside an active Canadian coal mine.

Killing wolves is going from an emergency strategy to avoid caribou extinction to a long-term strategy to avoid caribou habitat protection.

Referencing recent work by @wildco.bsky.social PhD Taz Gharajehdaghipour. Will we get serious about habitat protections for this threatened species? Can we enact forestry reform to create sustainable economic opportunities that support caribou ecosystems? news.mongabay.com/2026/09/as-b...

Has anyone used the rockie talky radios? Wondering what the real experience is with range and durability. They look good but I need ideally 5 miles of range on the tundra. One person can go up on the roof of camp and that will presumably increase the range quite a bit.
