I’m just an oatmeal socialist girl, standing in front of the Alberta NDP, asking them to campaign on more than “but the conservatives are worse” platform in the next election.

Gotta love this. Barrack Obama on Trump's constant attacks on Canada. Thank you sir. #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli

Scott Robertson@sarobertson.bsky.social

Obama: "Canada, that historical adversary of ours. It's your neighbour, a few minutes drive over the bridge. They are the nicest people. And somehow we've gotten them so mad because they're just constantly being abused and talked about. Talking about annexing their country, making it a 51st state."

Premier Smith, & Premier Smith alone, put every single divisive Q on the ballot, including the Canada Q. Our job is to make sure that she wears that responsibility - and that her efforts to blame others show her up as the dissembler or liar (take your pick) that she is. #ableg #abpoli

Here is Alberta's Premier, lying again, deflecting, and refusing to accept responsibility for putting the Canada question on the ballot. It's always 'other people' when things don't go her way. Nothing new, but she is not fit to hold public office. #ableg #abpoli

Danielle Smith throws Forever Canada under the bus, blaming them for the referendum: "If somebody doesn't want to put a vote forward, then they shouldn't start a petition campaign. If they're going to do that, then they have to understand that there are consequences to it."

Something is off with Trump tonight. The gaffes, the glitches, the confusion are well beyond his usual. "They gave the wonderful peace prize, right? Does anybody know the name of that peace prize? They gave the Pulitzer Prize to a young lady."

With 96% of the voting locations counted (6 pm), good to see that Smith faces a no vote on 3 of her constitutional Qs including the absurd idea that provincial laws should be paramount over inconsistent federal laws The only 1 surviving is senate abolition, a federal NDP policy! LOL. #abpoli #ableg

And now at 10.45 pm with 97% of voting locations "in" it looks like Premier Smith has gone down in flames on very single constitutional question - despite spend our tax dollars advocating for each one of these questions. #abpoli #ableg

They forgot the word “counted” or “counting” in about four places. It means 96% of the polling stations have started counting at least one of the questions. It does not mean 96% counted and completed. You can see what has been done per question here. Lots to be counted still. referendumb.adnams.ca

referendumb.adnams.ca2026 Alberta Referendum(b) ResultsNot binding. Not citizen initiated. $120–130 million so far. Live results by question, region, riding and poll.

And all consistent with the Premier's usual "flood the zone" strategy. Exhaust people with a multi-month referendum campaign of her own design, timing and making; and then drop what we anticipate will be a report on gerrymandering constituencies to dilute the urban vote. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

The referendum drama in Alberta is over. Up next: the highly contentious redrawing of electoral boundaries! The advisory panel that was appointed in June is due to give its report to the UCP-controlled Select Special Committee *tomorrow* (Oct. 22). Some thoughts on this from a poll we did in May:

robsonfletcher.comAlbertans are paying attention to electoral boundary changes and uncomfortable with what they see · Robson FletcherTwo-thirds of Albertans say they're aware of the province's unusual electoral boundary process — and most want it out of politicians' hands.

Listening to the Premier. Last week it was "I was legally required by the Citizen Initiative Act" to put the Canada Q on the ballot. She has backed off that lie. Now it is "out of respect for the CIA process". Equally not so. On the ballot 'cos it was politically expedient for Smith #aboli #cdnpoli

It's interesting that of the 9, the 1 Q that voters are balking at is Q8 the "opt out of federal programs with full compensation". What does that tell me? That Albertans don't trust Smith to deliver on those national health care, social service & educational programs. #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli

Want to read about something other than the referendum today? My latest ABlawg post deals with the CER’s decision to approve TMX’s negotiated tariff settlement with its shippers. 1/ #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli

Much of the post deals with issues of utility regulation and just and reasonable rates. Ultimately the question is this, are just and reasonable rates the same as public interest or public convenience and necessity rates? I don’t think so, but the CER seems to have conflated these ideas. 3/

The post also raises a more general legal question, namely: how should a court apply a Vavilovian reasons-led reasonableness review to a regulator’s decision to approve a negotiated settlement?

The CER did so even though TMX’s own evidence confirms that TMX’s target rate of return is below commercial rates (i.e. a subsidy to shippers (aka oilsands producers) funded by Canadian taxpayers). 2/

Just poked through the referendum election results, and I'm not trying to make anyone feel hope (the worst emotion), but lots of mail-in ballots to report for questions 1-9, especially 3-9 to come. The mail-in ballots were 20%+ more Option 1, so I'd expect the no % on the questions to increase.

Most of the coverage tonight has been a relitigation of Alberta’s grievances. Talking to separatists whining about Trudeau, panelists whining about Trudeau…and nobody ever really trying to introduce facts to their feelings. Pathetic.

You don't have to do this, @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social. It's a choice. They want to defund you. They think you're a propaganda arm of an evil government. You will never win them over by showing them grace when they show absolutely none towards you.

"can't ignore a quarter of the population" 🙄 yeah Ian, I'm sure you'd say the same thing about a 25% popular vote for the federal Liberals in Alberta too. Don't confuse normal Albertans for Danielle Smith. Trust me Brodie, we definitely can ignore these minority freaks. Danielle can't.

When certain people ultimately point fingers at Elections Alberta for the delay and missteps tonight, don't forget who underfunded and hampered EA's requests for help to make sure this would run more smoothly.
