Graham Platner, a guy with no education, a little military time with combat tours but no commendations, a history of being an Internet edgelord including victim blaming women for getting sexually assaulted and saying women should wear rape proof underwear, who runs a struggling oyster farm (next)

That's legitimate. The party leadership doesn't want anyone who wants meaningful change and they can't figure out that when you remove the labels of leftist policies and ask voters if they want them they say yes. And maybe they don't want those polices. The party is an embarrassment. (next)

If I didn't think it would guarantee Republican victories at a time where that would finish America I'd support creating a third party. But it looks to me like the voters of Maine got played and the clear beneficiaries are the Republicans. I don't think believing that makes me crazy.

When the stories started coming out I kept asking these questions. It seemed like someone had him in their crosshairs. Like they were ready for him. I was convinced there was going to be more once he was nominated and that it would be more serious. And I wasn't wrong. (next)

The fact all of this happened in a race the Democrats had a legitimate chance of winning if they could find the right candidate just seems off. I get blaming the party for focusing on establishment Democrats and trying to bury anyone that might have ideas on the left. (next)

for a race in a state with 1.2 million residents, and raises $1 million in 9 days. But somehow I'm crazy, or a bot, or MAGA for thinking it looks like a setup. I'm not even talking about the stories. I'm just talking about who he is, how he ended up in the race, and what happened next. (next)

Let's set aside all of the issues that came up. There's a lot there, but let's ignore them. This is a guy whose resume doesn't have anything on it that shows he's qualified to be a Senator. But he's recruited. This isn't a candidate someone chose to back, he's a guy they talked into running. (next)

🧵 Thread: I know the USA has a reputation for, um, impolity: our citizens are sometimes considered rude or boorish abroad; our federal government is out of control. I like seeing No Kings protests internationally, but I think Canada & Mexico would be lining the borders w/ hate signs. I'm tired…

Apparently Trump just birthered Nikki Haley over on TruthSocial by relying on the Constitutional interpretation of a … Cornell Law Class of 2022 grad. This is all so fun.

An endemic problem with American capitalism is how the vast majority of large investors and C-suite managers are incapable of envisioning any business model other than "I have an unregulated monopoly with low labor costs." When these plans fail, they have no idea what to do but cut labor costs more.

Gotta read btwn the lines but this story hints at an often overlooked issue: the new entertainment landscape wasn't inevitable. Studios chose to create it because Wall St told them it would be easy $. Now they say they can't afford to pay writers & actors more. Bitch you fucked up, you take the hit

and here are the reactions. this stuff makes me legitimately angry since the outright claim is that black people trying to process their feelings in the open is tantamount to being a segregationist

emily yahr wrote a great, nuanced story about the complicated feelings among black artists around the massive success of luke combs’ cover of “fast car” and the usual suspects — “rational” centrists like noah smith and conor friedersdorf — are denouncing it as race-baiting. here’s the story.
