“It’s that you’re robbing your constituents to subsidize your donors” is a brilliant line that Ontario’s opposition parties should steal and work in to every question they ask at the legislature and every time they’re anywhere near a camera or microphone.

Instead of privatizing water utilities so that their new owners can use the monopoly to extract greater rents, let’s make electricity and telecom utilities public again.

The Lever@levernews.com

Your water bill could be 67% higher simply because a corporation owns your water system. A new analysis found households served by for-profit providers paid about $823 a year for drinking water in 2025. Public-system households paid just $494.

Moneris, the Canadian system used to process 5 billion of transactions annually for 325,000 points of sale, is being sold by the owners (RBC and BMO) to a US private equity firm. I don't think this protects Canadian digital sovereignty. I signed a petition for Ottawa to intervene, and you can too.

Coyne really nails the big problem with the bike lane decision in this article. The challenge wasn’t about whether MPPs can repeal legislation (which didn’t happen here), but whether the government is responsible and can be enjoined for the foreseeable effects of tangible physical actions it takes.

Cycle Toronto@cycletoronto.bsky.social

Andrew Coyne in @theglobeandmail.com : "The point is that in going about a lawful activity, people should not have their lives needlessly imperilled by the government. I emphasize: needlessly."

So why is that a problem, beyond the obvious that this decision will result in people being injured & dying? It’s true that no parliament can bind a future parliament in our system, but this court & our Premier Retroactive-Immunity seem convinced that also means that no law can bind the government.

Fundamentally, Piketty argues that the cheapest way to stop people from building a guillotine on your lawn is to build hospitals and schools; this is cheaper than paying for guards and prisons to lock up would-be guillotine builders. 43/

This Premier used midnight sittings to ram through legislation so he could shutter the Legislature for most of the year to avoid questioning by Opposition MPPs. Then he decided Ontarians should pay the hotel bills, because his government’s raison d’être is enriching his friends at public expense.

Isaac Callan@isaaccallan.bsky.social

NEW: Doug Ford railed against his own MPPs for claiming hotel stays in downtown Toronto, telling them they'd all have to pay it back. The thing is, it was actually the government that told them to use the perk in an email last year. #Onpoli globalnews.ca/news/1197496...

Some MPPs should be going to jail over this.

The Breach@breachmedia.ca

Ontario jails are using an AI tool that claims to predict prisoners’ behaviour. And it’s disproportionately placing Black prisoners in maximum security. An investigation by @desmondcole.bsky.social reveals the province knew the tool would discriminate against Black people—and used it anyway.

"Private-public" partnership. The public will pay the full load. The oil giants get all the profit. We paid $34 billion for TMX pipeline. The companies balked at having to pay their share through the toll rates so the public has been subsidizing 50 cents on the barrel. #astheplanetburns

My wife said “I am so tired of this, it is so corrupt and wasteful and stupid.” Is there nothing that can be done to stop Doug Ford from wasting all our money on blatant political ads?

Mark Carney’s austerity and anti-regulatory actions are both harming Canadians now, and teeing up future elections for far-right populists.

"Third Way" liberal politics involves *saying* things that working people love, but *doing* things that sociopathic plutocrats love. It works ...right up until voters notice that you're not *doing* the things. That realisation breeds cynicism and fury and paves the way for fascist strongmen. 2/

This is what runs through my head every time someone says to get rid of rent control so the market can be more efficient, or is quiet about the need for federal & provincial governments to directly build housing while they’re loud about the (real) need to revisit development regulations.

The government should be protecting our public airports, not selling them off for parts. History is littered with examples of the failures of privatization. It drives up costs for the public, quality suffers, and workers always end up paying the price.

I could have sworn we voted against a Conservative government, but somehow we’re stuck with Stephen Harper redux.

The Carney government (now a majority) cut $5 BILLION from public transit. From public transit! While expanding fossil fuels and militarism in a climate crisis! #cdnpoli

TTCriders@ttcriders.bsky.social

Carney spends over $2 billion to cut fuel taxes right after cutting $5 billion in funding dedicated towards supporting, maintaining, & upgrading transit in Toronto and across Canada that millions rely on. Remember, public transit is the real solution to high fuel prices - not temporary tax cuts!

The Doug Ford gov't has passed its 2026 budget bill, which officially removes Ontario's right to know. How he governs, why decisions get made—we'll never know. The same bill consolidates conservation authorities. That's your democracy & your drinking water being impacted #onpoli

Why did Canadians say they want to join the EU? Because this is more in line with our values than Carney’s plans to build more pipelines, cut environmental protection laws and give tax breaks to oil & gas.

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

EU’s energy crisis response is broader than expected: remote work mandates, heat pump subsidies, EV leasing schemes — plus electrification targets and new laws to tax electricity below fossil fuels.
