My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

This Day in Labor History: October 16, 1859. John Brown and a group of followers invade the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today WV) to start a war and end slavery. Let's talk about this key moment in American labor history!

I double-checked this on a couple of Xitter stat sites and it's true. Average views of the main AfD account dropped 90% and average engagement dropped by 60%. This is commercial social media for you: bots, damn bots and Russian bots.

We’ve been talking about this for years. None of these far-right movements are organic.

Angel Reese is the best player on a team going to the WNBA Finals. Also DPOY. Haven't written many pieces that have aged better than this one.

New from me: Angel Reese told no lies about the sorry state of the Chicago Sky Jeff Pagliocca committed organizational malpractice with his roster decisions. He needs to be fired. Reese just said what anyone paying attention already knew. www.sbnation.com/wnba/1078301...

Filed under: things that are not mind-boggling.

Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

It is really hard to tell the players’ perspective of an ongoing story when the players with actual power don’t speak publicly. Players always like to remind us that we in the media ‘aren’t there every day’ but we can’t do anything about that if nobody speaks to us and we can’t attend training

more stars media gripes: 2 weeks in a row, Grosso's bumped from pre-match media. We haven't had access to her, or Staab and Swanson in months. Post match media tends to be rookies or bench players. It's hard to talk about how the more veteran players feel right now when we can't talk to them.

I guess hockey is for everyone, but the NHL IS not!

Some keep asking for the most likely scenario in which AI kills all humans and destroys civilisation. It’s important to understand that IT IS NOT POSSIBLE to identify it in advance. If we knew the route, we could close and solve it today.

1) PROFIT 2) .... 3) Name 11 players to the starting roster in a professional women's soccer game

andré, but scarier@andre-carlisle.bsky.social

the people running the nwsl and its clubs would much rather be on lists created by sports business journal or forbes anyway and well [/car mechanic voice] there's your problem right there

I don't think "gallingly unprofessional" is too strong a descriptive after being subjected to viewing Chicago's defending in the box, which has probably left me scarred for life.

Poor recruitment, poor strategic planning, no cohesive identity, no plus value moves, no stacking of +Ev transactions, no team style even. Doesn’t matter how hard you train with those limitations. Just a brutal run

Lesley Ryder@lesleyryder.bsky.social

I don’t have the soccer IQ to explain how poor the Chicago Stars are playing. I believe they’re working hard in training, I believe the players are keeping together, but when match day comes, it’s just not translating. This organization is failing its players, and it’s hard to see a way forward.

Tuesday will mark the 3-year anniversary of the Ricketts-led ownership group taking over the Stars. They’ve had almost three years to build a team around Mal Swanson, and they’re no closer to a winning solution than they were in 2023. Their identity is a mystery, and the club is suffering for it.

Rest in peace, a legendary Canadian entertainer. His story on finding the voice for Optimus Prime through his brother is so good.

RIP Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor who brought Optimus Prime, Eeyore, Monterey Jack, and dozens of other memorable characters to life over the past half-century.
