Silly question. Lots of things have improved (lower poverty, less violence, more awareness of discrimination and the need to combat it). The problem is, the benefits of this are very unevenly distributed (see, Gaza).

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Good news: As well as suffering from the general shittening of the internet, Google Scholar has now decided that my 2019 monograph was, in fact, published in 1945!

Why is this student so upset about the mushroom, though? What could it have done to make her protest across the whole continent

This framing assumes professors are all more leftist than our students. My median undergraduate comes to my classes with politics to the left of mine. If I were trying to “convert them” politically, which is absolutely not my goal, I would be turning them more moderate, not more radical.

Two headlines from the Canberra Times on the 24th of May, 1968. 10 million French workers were on strike (half the workforce) and de Gaulle was preparing for military action. And, it was all sparked by student protests over the school system, who were written off as 'extremists' and 'agitators'.

Those who do not understand the past are condemned to repeat it. Those who do understand, well they just go ahead anyway.

In this explosive follow up to the story about the American Historical Association's use of DC lobbyists to silence AHA member Palestine advocacy, we have this: AHA is conducting a witchhunt of its Council. Loyalty oaths. Lawyers. Threats. Authoritarian behavior. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

Went to the October 17 protest in Paris today. Lot of anger, especially about the police actions over previous weeks where students lost hands / an eye. This was at Republique.

A truly sad day for Gramsci studies with the news that Peter Thomas has died. For reasons indicated at the beginning of the commentary, here is a hastily put together tribute. He is survived by Sara Farris and their two children and my sincerest condolences and deepest sorrow remain with them.

Greek Australians will boo a Welcome to Country in one breath and then tear up as they tell you about their claim to a part of Turkey where their family lived 600 years ago. Embarrassing.

Suggestion: rather than a state, downgrade North Queensland to a territory. Maybe even roll it in with the NT. Then make south east Queensland a state instead. Except the gold coast which we will forcibly amalgamate with NSW.
