Absolute fucking cowardice condemning thousands to pain, fear and misery

Andrew Copson@andrewcopson.bsky.social

This failure has only one certain consequence: ongoing unwanted suffering for thousands of dying people and their friends and families. The minority of peers who've talked this bill out have guaranteed that suffering will continue for now but the Bill will come back and eventually it will pass.

This story is such a bad example of journalists *creating* news. They sent out a survey to 5,000 GPs. 752 replied. 540 said they’d never refused to give a fit note to someone who said they had mental health issues. 162 said they had refused, which is over a fifth. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukHundreds of GPs tell BBC they have never refused a fit note for mental health concernsThe number of fit notes issued has been rising, with more than 11.2m approved in England last year.

Releasing this episode and realising there’s no more miniseries to come makes the end of the show feel a lot more real. All the WYWHs are really special to us - they’re a chance to really dig in on characters, friendships, stakes. Hope you enjoy!

Oh nice! A new episode today. Already reading loads of wonderful stuff from listeners, mainly on Tumblr if you’re looking for places to discuss ❤️ Really hope you enjoy it!

Having watched the finale I would now like to Alien Unearth. How very silly it all was

Thinking about Alien Earth a lot. It’s one of those projects I get most animated about - a show I’ll watch day and date to soak in all those great ideas, and then marvel at how mind-boggingly daft the execution of those ideas has been

Received some family photos recently. Had very few until now. Just got surprised by finding photos of the trip that inspired Jade Turner’s memory in Season 4 of Red Valley. It was just as I remembered it. Oddly reassuring to have a memory confirmed to be real, if that makes sense.

So great to be on this list! We’re not the one about a hopeful future I’m afraid 🥸

Are you looking for audio dramas with such thorny futures that they'll make you grateful for our present? @laurenshippen.com put together a list (including one hopeful future and, of course, the cathartic scream about our modern day that is TWO THOUSAND AND LATE)

When the logic used to transport a cadaver across a short body of water is more fantastical than an eyeball alien or a guy with a cyborg blowtorch arm you have to wonder whether ideas and a Xenomorph are enough to get you over the line

Really quite anxious about this

Assisted dying bill faces crunch vote in House of Commons – UK politics live

theguardian.comAssisted dying bill faces crunch vote in House of Commons – UK politics liveThe Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill will either clear the House of Commons and move to the Lords, or fail completely The relatively narrow majority of 55 from the historic yes vote in November means every vote will count on Friday. As an example, the assisted dying bill would fall if 28 MPs switched directly from voting yes to no, but only if all other MPs voted exactly the same way as they did in November, including those who abstained, reports the PA news agency. Higher tax receipts were unable to prevent a rise in public sector borrowing in May to £17.7bn, up from £17bn a year earlier and the second highest for the month on record. A poll of City economists had forecast public sector net borrowing – the difference between public spending and income – would be £17.1bn. The figures will add to the concerns that the government is struggling to bring down the annual deficit to keep within strict spending rules. Thousands of European airline staff are being trained to stop people boarding flights to Britain without valid visas, in a move billed by the foreign secretary as a digital upgrade to border controls. David Lammy said the measures marked a step towards “more secure, more digital and more effective” borders, but the move could raise questions about human rights safeguards. Cuts of £5bn to the UK overseas aid budget cannot be challenged in the courts, government lawyers have said, even though ministers have no plan to return spending to the legal commitment of 0.7 % of UK gross national income (GNI). The Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft has resigned as a whip in protest at the government’s welfare plans, saying she will not be able to vote for the cuts to disability payments. Children in England face prolonged “lost learning” caused by extreme heat and flooding at school, according to research on the potential impact of the climate crisis on education. School leaders and teachers said the scenarios published by the Department for Education made for grim reading and urged ministers to move quickly to improve school resilience. Continue reading...
