71 yrs ago today, the LA Times reported on climate change. These sorts of articles not uncommon then, mentioning coal-burning as one possible cause. By late 1970s the articles were longer, more emphatic and quoting very worried scientists. And here we are...

Why not ask Badenoch WHY 'we are not ready to use renewables' after so many years of Conservative government? #BBCBreakfast Environmentalists have called out the costs of slow action for decades. Pathetic to continue claiming climate action on fossil fuels can wait.

True food security starts with supporting British farmers, not engineering our food. To build a healthy, sustainable food system we must back our growers and embrace a truly agroecological approach. #BackBritishFarmers #Agroecology #UKPolitics

Governments did not even know which care homes could isolate residents safely. Nor were alternative isolation facilities ready. Exercise Cygnus had identified the need for social-care capacity planning in 2016, but the work remained unfinished. 8/10

Care workers were given guidance that was detached from reality, including advice to remain two metres from people while providing intimate care. PPE shortages left some working with unsuitable equipment or none at all. The report calls this “wholly unacceptable”. 10/10

By mid-March 2020 there was enough evidence of possible asymptomatic transmission to justify a precautionary approach. The Inquiry says all hospital admissions to care homes should have been isolated. Scotland introduced this advice earlier. 7/10

The Inquiry explicitly rejects the claim that a “protective ring” was thrown around care homes “right from the start”. It says that claim did not accurately reflect the lack of action in March and the first half of April 2020. 3/10

When I arrived at the 1st care home COVID outbreak in those early weeks, I found a group of frightened teenage staff (their managers were already off sick) wearing cloth masks and aprons improvised from supermarket carrier bags. Pretty sure I didn't see any "protective ring"

Read this important thread, and also consider how many uncounted people died at home, or on admission to hospital without receiving any healthcare given the absence of testing or access to GPs early in 2020.

Kit Yates@kityates.bsky.social

The Covid Inquiry’s Module 6 report is devastating. Its central conclusion: adult social care was treated as “something of an afterthought”, while “protecting the NHS” sometimes came at the expense of people receiving and providing care. 1/10

#MoreorLess?@timharford.ft.com Many say: Jackdaw will cost more in subsidies than tax returned, produce gas sold internationally, only support 27 jobs and won't reduce our bills. Govt: will increase 'domestic'(?) gas production, protect energy security, 100s of jobs, add £2.9 billion to economy.

The 'Christian' Nationalism mask slipped on unbalanced Sunday Morning Live, with claim from Tim Dieppe that activity is 'not as bad as the far worse antisemitism and incitement to violence' seen on some Palestinian marches, (which went unchallenged). Bishops disagree. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

Interviewed on BBC1, Badenoch is asked about her comment that people are "cheating the system" to claim sickness benefits. Asked what proportion of claimants she thinks do this, Badenoch replied: "My team have done the research. I don't have those figures to hand." Slightly odd answer.

Real #nationalresilience urgently needed. And thank goodness we Earthlings all benefit from our investment in space technology, like combating extreme temperatures with flexible clothing and equipment . . Oh. Wait.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Tom Watson’s move to Palantir is the latest sign of how far the rot has spread in UK politics. Like Blair, Cameron, Clegg, Mandelson, hired to open govt networks to companies and corporate capture of the state. They sell political capital built with public money. What do we get in return?

Across the world, sometimes peaceful street protesters are cable tied and arrested, elsewhere, despite challenging behaviour, they are not. Inside the UN, Netanyahu can spill his mendacious messages (does he not know we have SEEN 'settler violence') in person, while Abbas cannot enter the US.

I’ve reached the point - well actually, I reached it a while ago - where I’m militantly anti-AI. Fine - use it in bioscience labs and radiology where it might help analyse data more effectively. Use it sparingly for systems engineering. Everywhere else, it can fuck off.

Share this post with your friends & family to say THANK YOU for the incredible, lifesaving work the RNLI does every single day! We want to make it clear that the recent hateful attacks on the RNLI do not represent how we feel as a country. These people calling RNLI heroes “scum” don't speak for us.

38d.gsAn open letter in support of the volunteers and staff at the RNLIThis is a disgrace. Brave RNLI volunteers being called scum for risking their lives to save others at sea is just plain wrong. So I've signed an open letter of thanks for the RNLI letting them know…

Surely only one further step to donning 'border security' outfits bought online and dragging people off the streets.

this weird thing across all of these events that we're meant to accept that you can somehow deputise yourself into being border control/immigration authorities via the act of "protest"

Dear the BBC, you used to learn place names properly. I understand that compliance with Reform distate for supporting foreign language is essential to your messaging, (except of course for Faraaage) but I have seen very few 'Bayeux' scores in your subtitling. Noted 'bio' and 'by a' in the past hour.

Agreed, have seen debate about some common goods with common sense between progressive speakers. The more of them we elect, the more their voices can unite where possible, and the more they can act on our behalf.

This is an ad from London Underground - clearly designed to inoculate the public against potential horrors of a eugenicist assisted suicide program. Why is she jumping for joy? Why are we celebrating this? Why aren’t we acknowledging rapid increase in disabled people means many will be coerced? /1
