No AI… sorry, SI? It’s never going to work.

What if I told you that seeing a hagfish instantly produce a full bucket of slime was one of my most cherished college memories.

Happy Hagfish Day! Today we’re celebrating hagfishes - hagfishes are ancient marine animals perhaps best known for their remarkable ability to produce large amounts of slime when threatened. When the slime hits seawater, it expands to form a gel which can clog a predator's mouth and gills.

Started my day with water pouring from the kitchen ceiling from a radiator pipe leak, which meant I had to drain the whole system to stop it. Good to happen the first day I turn the heat on rather than when it was actually cold. But how's your day been?

I don't usually repost my own stuff, but I'm still thinking about this exchange and giggling. Since the was a late Sunday evening, I want to be sure people do get the chance to see it.

I’m proud he did well, but I could not resist this reply to my son.

Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.

My favorite part is the series of blog posts I wrote over time about how I was finally updating my website. Every time I really thought I would do it, and then didn't get there.

But now, I did it. Maybe some of the future ideas for updates will actually happen too, but let's not get our hopes high. Past performance is often indicative of future results, despite what the stock market ads say.

the NEH is a ghost of an organization. the NEA's budget is $29 million. I'm not saying this to be pissy, but simply to say that when we rebuild - and we will rebuild - I expect solidarity from my STEM colleagues as we robustly expand research in the arts and humanities as well.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Whiteboards were the beginning of the end.

Contrary opinion: universities are burning money on the wrong things 1) Use dumber tools—all that tech costs a fortune 2) Slash executive administration by 80% 3) Stockpile books, chalk, and nice smooth slate 4) Let faculty prioritize research and teaching

"An ambulance was seen arriving at the prison where Pike was to be executed and then leaving. Medical aid was being administered, according to online federal court records." The utter absurdity of the state trying twice to kill someone and then calling an ambulance. We must end the death penalty.

My son just declared the bolognese I made (with Impossible beef, as he’s vegetarian) “the best thing I’ve eaten since camp.” Which felt pretty good except that I thought I’d made a number of other pretty great meals over the last month.

It is breathtaking. Like many things these days it is hard, but necessary, to figure what is a continuity and what is a rupture. EdTech has always been a private sector parasite feeding off the public sector. The rupture is AI EdTech is experimenting on the rich instead of the poor.

This post is unavailable.

You know, we have ways to publish biological findings that aren’t just blog posts and quotes of excited ai model musings. That said, I was thinking just this morning that looking for novel CRISPR-like systems would be a great use of AI.

On the other hand, apparently this needed access to Mythos (which missed it more often than not found anything) so just having the idea isn’t particularly useful, even if I’d had it much earlier.

Trump announces the US is adopting SI? Oh. Never mind.

Trump: "We're also going to be demanding the drug companies, with respect to a certain situation -- the autism -- that they make their doses in 20% shots. So you have shot 1, shot 2, shot 3, shot 4, shot 5 ... I think you're gonna see a massive reduction in autism"

BREAKING: We're suing Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the National Institutes of Health Director for their ideologically-driven termination and censorship of biomedical research grants. Targeting views the government disagrees with for not aligning with a political agenda is unconstitutional.

I was assigned a section of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek before my freshman year in college. I found it absolutely transfixing and immediately got myself the full book to read. It’s been a while, so I look forward to pulling it off the shelf. RIP Annie Dillard. Thank you.

Make your favorite film sound as boring as possible without giving away the title: A chief technology officer is worried about keeping his spreadsheets private.

This looks very cool, but until it is a single function available for scverse and/or Bioconductor, it isn’t going to be adopted.
