Kinked dustball, stuck on a pale blue dot. Is it 42, or ''just some beans, sire''?

Long sequence, nicely showing evasive actions. (#OTD in 1944, Yugoslavia. Lieutenant Snyman's Beaufighter from 16 Squadron SAAF attacking a locomotive. #WW2 #HISTORY)

I do love a silver razorback P-47 Thunderbolt. Brutish yet shiny. Here is an original Kodachrome image and the zoomed-in crop from the original NARA file. 42-27607 was flown by 2Lt Richard D. Stark of the 82nd FS, 78th FG and was shot down on 3rd Sept 1944. Stark became a POW. #avgeek #aviation

"I was told," said the princess, "that the point of fairy tales is not to tell children dragons exist, but that they can be killed." "Oh, absolutely!" said the dragon. "You agree?" "These rich, selfish, powerful, cruel beings that need killing, did you think they're literally dragons, princess?"

I mean, this image, showing a dozen P-51Cs and Ds of the 361st Fighter Group tooling up on some (I'm guessing from the tail) B-17s in late summer 1944 (they have stripes), is 331 MB, and you can zoom in almost to your hearts' content... This is how you digitally conserve.

Looking through the NARA images today, hunting down Kodachrome ones, and came across this well-known image of P-51B-15-NA 42-106950 'The Iowa Burt'. I've not seen this image so clean before, and the original file is 83 MB. Screw you IWM, this is how you do photos. #avgeek

Take a moment to think about what this image shows. That's a glint of sunlight, reflecting off a lake of liquid ethane and methane, on a moon that's larger than Mercury where the average surface temperature is –180°C, orbiting a giant ringed planet 1.4 billion kilometres away.

1/30 #OTD 199 years ago, in a bay in southern Greece, three navies sailed in and anchored among an enemy fleet. Four hours later, it was gone. Navarino, 20 October 1827, was the last great battle fought entirely by sailing ships, and nobody was meant to fire. #maritimehistory

"Jet-powered biplane cropduster" are not a set of words that belong together, but incredibly it's by far the least of my problems with this...

Do you really want to go round the bend? Here's the infamous Belphegor, a Polish jet-powered biplane crop duster, named for a demon from Hell.

"I have been challenged to a duel," she said. "For kissing a woman." "Did she consent?" the swordmaster said. "Yes, but men courting her did not." "Ah. How many?" "Are these men good?" She gave three names. "Far below your level." "Excellent!" She rose. "There are more women I want to kiss."
