Inordinately proud of myself for replacing iOS’s new annoying timer behavior in Control Center with a Shortcut that opens the Timers tab in the Clock app. Annoyed that I feel the need to keep doing things like this on a device that’s supposedly known for its user friendly design.

I don’t know what use case made Apple designers think I wanted to manually drag an analog sliding scale to set a timer every time I use that feature rather than choosing between either “tea” or “laundry,” but I welcome their user research team to give me a ring so I can sigh at them wearily.

It was high time for my little game to be released to the public. GRINDERS is a two-page lo-fi pulp sci-fi RPG about ordinary workers keeping industrial colonies alive: miners, machine operators, rescue workers, technicians, etc. Many thanks to @jst.bsky.social. siwesznaucery.itch.io/grinders

At first I thought, “Well, I wouldn’t go THAT far,” but there’s a reason I design games that put things straight into “rules” that you may be used to seeing under “safety tools.” I feel strongly enough about this as a philosophy of play that I’ll hard code it into the design.

For Halloween, I'm embracing my most diabolical impulses. To that end, I've written a player advice manifesto on the One True Way to play games- Pawn Stance. Read it, and be horrified at the lack of nuance. Come fight me about it, if you dare. diceexploder.com/posts/pawn-s...

Four reasons why I think MÖRK BORG's index is good. 1. It's divided into three sections so that you can quickly filter to the third you're looking for and not have to sift through as many irrelevant entries. If you're looking for a thing in the Rules, you just ignore The World and Creatures.

So... I ran @jst.bsky.social's 2400 LOFI Sci-Fi: The Venusian Job twice this weekend. The crews (players) could not have approached things more differently! The Saturday Crew? Merchants of chaos! They planned an elaborate heist and may have also ignited a Venus vs Earth conflict. 1/2

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

Every now and then somebody asks what the big deal is about Mothership and I struggle to explain what an impressive feat it is to sustain a product line and a business with attention to what human beings actually need, along multiple axes.

Mothership Month is back this year, with one big caveat: no crowdfunding, no new releases. Instead we're investing back in the community: For starters: the Jump-9 Writers Grant will invest $9k in 3 new writers to help them each create a Mothership zine. www.failuretolerated.com/mothership-m...

Probably zero unless you made my kid cry over the weekend after I already said to leave her alone, in which case whatever number represents being addressed with a wide eyed “yes sir”

The books by @marthawells.com are among my absolute favorite series, so I approached the TV show “cautiously optimistic” at best. Season 1 exceeded my expectations. Season 2’s cast announcement has me sputtering at my phone, “YES. NOW. PLEASE.”

“It isn’t simply a matter of allowing your approach to your responsibilities to show that you care, however; you must also care deeply about people while being prepared to be hated in return.” Radical Candor is a book about business leadership, but I’m pretty sure this quote’s about parenting.

AI RANT Following the cancellation of three major debut book deals over AI suspicions, I decided to put my own (needless to say, 100% human-written) prose to the test. My detector of choice was Originality AI, and the results proved to be jarring, to say the least. 🧵1/5

Heard an ad today that claimed mosquitos have killed half of everyone who ever lived. I am totally on board with malaria prevention! I’m not on board with living in a post-facts era where patently absurd statistics are trotted out even in the name of public health. Not a good look for science.

If we’re talking conspiracy theories: is Cranky Kong the original Donkey Kong (more of a nickname for a guy who used to throw barrels at you if you tried to stop him from kidnapping or criticized his parents for the typo on “Monkey Kong”), and the Donkey Kong you see here Donkey Kong III?

The local library lets kids borrow American Girl dolls. My kiddo has been waiting to visit for days. (And has been in not the best mood with me.) When we finally arrived, she was bummed to find they only had a boy … named Jason. She took it home anyway. ❤️
