My new piece about the most interesting race this election year: California insurance commissioner. For real! One candidate wants to socialize the whole system...and everyone wants to know how insurance is going to deal with the new world of climate disasters. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Larry Itliong understood that our greatest strength comes from standing together. His leadership helped unite workers across backgrounds in the fight for dignity and fairness. On Larry Itliong Day, may his legacy inspire us to keep building a more just and equitable future.

Also — Nithya Raman could immediately dismiss the current LA mayoral appointees to the Metro board, like, say, Imelda Padilla, who has no real interest or expertise in transit, and replace these board seats with people who actually ride transit

This is very important not just for Culver City, but for Los Angeles, too. LA had a similar proposal approved by its charter reform commission that was killed by the city council in its last-minute rush. Now LA is reviewing reform proposals & Culver City passing this would boost chances in LA.

NEW in Bolts: In Culver City, California, students are trying to drum up support for a November ballot measure to let 16- and 17-year-olds participate in city council and school board elections.

The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!

Owen Barcala@obarcala.bsky.social

But, like, New America wouldn't make any sense because this is still the original America and... You know what, forget it

During my first run for San Diego City Council in 2018 the District 6 boundaries included Clairemont, the neighborhood most affected by lead pollution from nearby Montgomery Field. While unleaded fuel was finally made available there in 2024, there was no requirement to use it. There still isn't.

Striking thing to me about the AES-Tommy vid is that he gives Tommy opportunities to correct but resists the temptation to be sympathetic or save face. Leaves him with ‘go tell your king what happened here.’

New walk/bike path finally opened up after 5 years on the north side of Harbor Dr next to the airport. Pretty nice, except of course it stops literally halfway to Point Loma and dumps you on to the highway. Why would anyone on bikes actually want to ride somewhere useful? /s

good comments around this, just want to add that orgs and institutions, ahem libraries, can however slightly move the center of gravity in ways that ordinary individuals can’t 📚

I need to develop this idea more, that pro-moderation systems protect us from the right wing but are not constraining of progressives the way we imagine. Because a Mamdani, or a Raman, are moderate along important dimensions. libraryfresh.leaflet.pub/3mw7s6k5pdk2b

For as much as people scoff when Dem politicians say the country needs a sane GOP, they’re right because you can’t just win every election. Thermostatic opinion is a bitch and you’re going to lose sometimes because of it. The insulation against that is losing to a party that won’t drive off a cliff.

One more thing on this. There's no bus. Amtrak sometimes runs bus bridges, but not reliably. Metrolink, never. Because of the cost – need many vehicles – probably takes state funding. At this point, a regular route w surge capacity (& shoulder running) is past due. There is Greyhound & Flix, fwiw.

Love this and taking nothing away from it... libraries do this! If you want passes for a museum, performance, match, pool, state park, &c… check w your library. AND… If you're an attraction that has extra capacity & wants a simple, managed way to share it with your city, check with your library! 📚

Already a victory for CA top-two elections. That's right, say it with me.

weird day to be worried about state-run tv, gavin!

Governor Gavin Newsom@governor.ca.gov

First, Trump banned independent news from the White House. Now, he's launching what is quite literally state-run TV to try drowning out the fact that he and his corrupt administration are failing the American people. This is truly autocratic behavior from a failed President.

I’m not confident that this would prevent abusive British-ish schools from multiplying. Rich parents would revolt? But it’s the law. It’ll take care of itself after a couple generations? Or not. People are skipping much too quickly past disagreement on what “good” means for schools.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

An edcuation policy soloution that would get you killed by angry parents but also fix like 60% of problems after a couple of generations is children being randomly assigned a public school within ten miles of their house. That is the school you attend and you cannot transfer.

Don't think you need or can rely on the good/bad play. Better, first do the rules change for secret ballot on impeachments. Hegs will be out by lunchtime, then pick off the rest in order.

meanwhile San Diegans have to be defended tooth and nail from the possibility of ever paying $10 to park that car at the beach

The recurring closures at San Clemente make another case for more state control of the Pacific Surfliner corridor. People traveling by train between Los Angeles and San Diego shouldn’t be at the mercy of Orange County’s disinterest in providing rail service.

Most GOP senators approve of Hegseth's loyalty purges but there are just enough who would impeach if they could do so anonymously. Take advantage of that. First, make the Senate rule change, and then let's see who else is vulnerable under a secret ballot...

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

The arguments against impeaching Trump next year are all bad and spurious, but they're even weaker as applied to all the other impeachable members of the Cabinet, etc. And impeaching Hegseth for literal murder should be top of the list.
