I find lost things, watch Ann Arbor City Council, and I like squirrels, tech, and city living. Change is fine. Primarily pedestrian.

Did you know?! Any items checked out at any one of AADL's five branches can be returned to any other branch from 10 AM–8 PM daily, or 24/7 at the outside return boxes. Return oversize items Downtown, where you can wheel them up the ramp while parked in the free loading zone outside the entrance!

“Why are we putting in bike lanes for the few people who use them?” #a2council

“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.” #Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing even better every year.

I will occasionally see people defend the courses on the basis that these courses are affordable, and you don't have to be wealthy to use them. But I looked at their rates for Washtenaw County's open courses. Huron Hills is is average, and Leslie Park is one of the pricier ones! #a2council

#a2council Huron Hills golf course is running at a $100k loss so far in 2026. Leslie Park is in the hole more than $200k. Historically, this is on par, too. Affordable housing on those lots is looking better and better and with a lot fewer puns.

“As expected, the likelihood of pedestrian death increased – but the rise was consistently greater for height than for weight. In other words, pedestrian fatality risk appeared more sensitive to increases in vehicle height.” On the other hand, air pollutants are more linked to weight.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Here’s what we found: Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

Better cycling cities are not just "more bike-friendly." They are also more equitable in access to cycling between genders. This means that infrastructure, safety, and policy improvements tend to benefit women more by removing barriers that affect them disproportionately.

#a2council Have you ever wondered how your taxes work, and why they go up every year? Well great news, because I wrote up this explanation for how taxes work. You can also see what causes your tax bill to go up every year (spoiler if you live in Ann Arbor, it's inflation)

At a housing training this spring, a presenter walked us through the math behind building a small affordable project–it reframed how I think about the whole debate. I wrote up a little reflection on what I learned, including the question I can't stop asking: who is going to close the gap? #a2council

Turns out “Missing Middle” housing hasn’t been missing. We knew where it was the whole time. We made it illegal. Never forget, housing choice is a leadership challenge. #UrbanTruth #MissingMiddle
