So-called “inclusionary zoning” is an attempt to outsource a key state responsibility—providing subsidized housing to poor people—to private for-profit actors so the state does not have to raise and spend tax money. It is profoundly neoliberal policy.

Novium@novium.bsky.social

It is also weird how ardently this incredibly neoliberal model is championed by otherwise leftist activists

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

"shouldn't be this hard" is an all-encompassing, feel-it-in-your-bones summary of modern American life -- of difficulties big and small, existential and annoying -- that should be at the core of every Democratic candidate's message for years to come.

El- Sayed: "Here‘s the thing about it – no matter who you are, how you love, how you pray, how you identify, it just should not be this hard... Shouldn‘t be this hard to keep our money here. Spend it on roads and bridges here, build our schools here, provide healthcare here. Shouldn‘t be this hard"

I was blown away by the quality of this bike trail when I visited Indy. Extend the curb and glory can be achieved. Tbh it also just looks more inviting than an on-street bike lane. I do wonder if the public would be more supportive if this was the standard www.wfyi.org/wfyi-news/20...

Opinion | Ann Arbor is changing. 15 years ago, the bars here would always ask for my ID when I got a beer. Now they just... assume I'm over 21. I wonder what made all the bars and restaurants change their policy. #a2council

American small business owners largely see themselves as lower-level rentiers in a quasi-feudal economy as opposed to service providers in a competitive market economy, and part of that means not having to actually be competent at providing services

I’ve lost track of how many small business owners in DC are shocked that their customers respond extremely negatively to their public tweets supporting Trump

The moral case for DEI is unchanged. There are still vast pools of talent in underrepresented groups that you can simply decide to go recruit. Reaching out to someone and asking, “You seem awesome, can I be helpful to you?” is far too uncommon and extremely effective. Just fucking do it!

The Bob's Burgers illustrators love accurate buildings and infrastructure, down to the framing, plumbing, wiring. The boiler has an expansion tank. The power poles have transformers wired up just like they should be. There's a gas meter in the alley. The under-sink plumbing is detailed and correct

We simply cannot get around the need for reparations to everyone affected by ICE. People have been sent to third countries, to countries they have nothing in, where surviving the transition is miraculous; we owe them this and more

The conversation also underlined for me the two things that need to happen first if this does pass: 1. The Board needs to set policies to avoid conflict the poorly constructed charter language will otherwise instigate, especially around funding approvals with Council and

2. The Board needs to do an honest assessment of the ongoing costs of studying and litigating this effort and propose a realistic way to pay for that. This will most likely entail a new property tax millage of .3-.6 mills to generate the millions of dollars a year needed.

Listening to Jess and Molly helped me understand why I am voting no despite sharing Jess' feelings of urgency around climate change and prioritizing equity and affordability: the MEU process is too expensive and slow to achieve rapid, radical change.

Everybody's loving this clip, for good reason, but it should remind everyone that cities therefore have an obligation to build enough housing that all these marginalized and outcast people can come and afford to live in them on minimum wage *without* becoming homeless. YIMBY!

All prisoners should have the right to vote while in prison

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

No matter how bleak things may seem, just remember that in the 1960s the US Coast Guard received reems of earnest letters begging them to save those poor castaways on Gilligan's Island.
