It’s going to go quiet for a while. The Elsebeneath is still there—ten books deep—but I’ve stepped away. If you need a story, the thread’s still waiting. I just won’t be holding it for now. I'll try to keep my /now page up to date. 🧵 thrd.me/now

www.tiktok.com/@marianna997... This is the reality of war.

The "swift surgical" approach works exactly once, on exactly the right target, under exactly the right preconditions. And this administration apparently looked at the one time it worked and concluded it was a generalizable method rather than a specific convergence of very particular circumstances. 🤦

I made a new thing. It's system tray app that turns any highlighted text into speech using kokorojs. Streams long documents in chunks so playback starts instantly. Word-by-word highlighting synced to audio. All running locally. It's all open source: steadyvoice.tech #ADHD #Dyslexia #a11y

Let's be honest. Local TTS usually sucks. So I fixed it. And wrote about it. thrd.me/localtts

I didn’t expect this piece to resonate the way it did. If you’re curious about the discourse around AI in the development community, the comment section turned into a surprisingly clear microcosm of it. thrd.me/paradox

Joy is looking at your teenage kids and just thinking "yeah, they're doing it right."

The question is not "to AI or not to AI" anymore. It's "how are you using it?" thrd.me/exocogence

After 30 years writing code, I've learned the hardest part isn't the tech—it's caring about quality when everyone around you has decided "good enough" is good enough. thrd.me/invisible

Well... I'm 5 minutes in and... Thanks for the imposter syndrome, @nonzerosumjames.bsky.social 😂♥️

It’s strange that no one acknowledges AI ethics is really a fight with ourselves. We wrote the training set. The more we hate online, the harder alignment becomes. The tool isn’t the problem. We are. We always were. And always will be. youtu.be/90C3XVjUMqE?...

TPM: *reset* Windows Hello: Hey, I'd like your keys, please. TPM: New BIOS, who dis?

Today is not the time to resign yourself to the comfort of cruel stability. Today is the time to stand up, find a way to make the world around you better, and find someone nearby who can help you make that happen.

Sometimes you just need to say: one thing is designed to justify why some people deserve to suffer, and the other thing is designed to reduce suffering. Pick a side. www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8AKCd9k/

You know what would be nice? A political candidate who didn't have solutions. But rather one who had ideas and the capacity for collaboration.

I didn’t mean to join a fandom. I just played a game, cared too much about the characters, and couldn’t stand the silence after the credits rolled. New piece on Dispatch and the genius of designing for connection: 👉 thrd.me/fandom #gamedev #ux #fandomfeels #Dispatch

If you ever find yourself going down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole, just remember: the intensity of your reaction has no bearing on the veracity of the claims. In other words, affect ≠ insight.

Bigots: "Go back to your country!" Also bigots: "Let's bring back the Church of England!" Sorry, you can't want Christian Nationalism and not contend with the fact that this country was established to escape that.

So this is how you drop drug prices, huh? thehill.com/business/552... By immediately causing price hikes for the most vulnerable Americans and waiting probably 5 to 6 years for any of those factories to be up and running. Fantastic plan. 🤦

Always remember this. usun.usmission.gov/explanation-... The US voted against the ability for the PLO president to *speak*. Not recognize statehood. Not resolve anything. Allow them to speak. And they refused.

I love this moment in Mo. مرحبا يا حبيبتي ≠ Hola, mi amor But it does mean the same thing. Hats off to whoever did the subtitles at @netflix.com for this show. (More details in the alt text)

Political candidates should be expected to stream a total of eight continuous hours at least once during any given campaign. Bonus points if it's with a rival. Give me any reason why that's not a fantastic idea.

There are maybe 1000 genuinely "successful kid #YouTuber" families. Likely even less on #roblox. Someone should collect some data, no? Do something real? There's a research grant in this, I'm sure. Is it always #exploitation, or survivorship bias? Let's do some data-driven policy-making, here.

America has become an authoritarian state

Nostalgia doesn’t evolve. But we do. The world changes—its music, its flavor, its voice. That’s not erasure. That’s inheritance. Maybe “American” was never a fixed identity. Maybe it was always a collection. thrd.me/nostalgia
