Hello claimants in the Anthropic copyright suit!
The parties filed a stipulated agreement asking for an update to the website.
In this stipulation, there are two important things (although there are more that might matter for individuals).

My god. This is 💔. Big humans are supposed to protect our little ones.
But also, I can't wrap my head around the depravity of pediatric specialists everywhere, still pumping out papers blaming lockdown for everything while not even bothering to count & support these kids (see also #LongCOVIDKids).
“Many children bereaved in the first pandemic waves are now adolescents or young adults, but their longer-term mental-health course remains largely unknown”

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years.
The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to.
There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!
Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review.
Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law.
None of this is normal.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.
The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors.
Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.
Finally figured out how to deliver the ultimate booklover's dream!

The separatists are going to lose today’s vote. But if Alberta’s political class doesn’t stop feeding and inflaming their bottomless sense of grievance and victimhood, we’ll all end up losing in the end. #abpoliwww.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/19/o...

Shoutout to @aanpress.bsky.social for their fair, author-friendly ONE PAGE contracts!
I've had the privilege of signing (/sometimes negotiating) a fair number of SFF/H short fiction contracts, and most genre small presses are pretty good these days, but I've never seen one quite *that* succinct!
🧵 Attention, Fellow SFF Artists and Authors -- here is my response to Must Read Magazines, after they presented an Asimov's art contract expecting me to waive all Moral Rights and Copyright to my art.
And, I would strongly advise the following to my fellow pros…. 1/
I usually design my business cards to be conversation-starters.
But at after too many endless awkward discussions at recent events, I realized I needed a new type of card. The conversation-ender.
We're beginning to prepare for a Kickstarter campaign to fund the next two years of new Utopian fiction, poetry, art, and essays. If you enjoy the darker side of the imagination as well as the lighter it's very worth supporting @nightmare-magazine.com and @lightspeedmagazine.com on theirs!
This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead
The Pacific Link pipeline moved another step forward last week, marking an expensive truce between Canada and Alberta, @drewanderson.bsky.social writes.
Despite the two governments agreeing it would be financed by the private sector, taxpayers were always going to foot the bill.
Canadian indies: anybody have a Canadian printer to rec?
Specifically one that's managed to supply a delivery of UNDAMAGED books recently?

Bill C-39 doubles down on habitat offsets, in which companies can "build" new habitat elsewhere to compensate for what they destroy in building a mine, a port, a pipeline or other project.
The practice is highly contested by scientists.

Starred Review: CHILDREN OF OWL by Darcie Little Badger
Shelf Awareness: The fourth solo novel for young readers from Newbery Honor-winning author Darcie Little Badger (A Snake Falls to Earth; Elatsoe) is a fairytale, a ghost story, and a striking narrative about trauma, community, and what we owe…
"Doomsday may be slower and more boring that the AI companies want you to believe, but accelerating already existing crises may well spell our doom...not Skynet, but Shitty Skynet."
www.powermapmag.com/p/shitty-sky...
one thing worth saying here specifically: there's lots that AI can't (yet) do and there's a lot of money riding on selling a particular narrative about its future capabilities. but the existential risk of AI is not only not mere hype but it is already a present tense problem
This is a thing everywhere in the world: on-site diesel generation is advertised as "backup" generation, but data centre operators plan to use it way, way more than that. Firmus in Australia now fighting against rules to limit pollution from their fossil-fuelled project
