Starting a new project? Turn on and enforce the following right now: -sRGB for all rendertargets and source textures. -premultiplied alpha in both textures and blending. -fixed-point world time and world position. Retrofitting these after the fact is a giant pain. Learn from my (repeated) fail!

Might as well share publicly, while I have a bunch of experience/expertise with Unreal Engine over the last 8 years, for the last 3 I've been tinkering with Godot. Godot is my engine of choice right now.

Flamegraph CPU profiling is likely the most efficient way to investigate performance issues in complex distributed systems like Apache Flink. Instead of guessing why something is slow, measure it.

BC has a new time zone abbreviation: PCT. PCT stands for Pacific Time, BC’s single year-round time zone. It replaces PST and PDT, providing a consistent way to refer to BC’s time zone in schedules, systems and communications. No falling back this November.

Following up on my post yesterday - announcing I will be off LinkedIn (and Bluesky) for all of August. I was off-platform this January, and I just wrote an article all about my experience. www.karlschmidt.net/No-Linkedin-.... It answers the why, how, and how it went.

karlschmidt.netNo LinkedIn MonthFor all of January 2026 I banned myself from LinkedIn. Hiatus. Break. Fast. Experiment. Why It seemed drastic, but upon reviewing how I spent my time, energy, and attention in 2025, it was clear that ...

Everything is good, I'm still thankfully quite busy with everything at my consulting company! Olya and I will be celebrating our wedding anniversary in August (17 years!), and I will be available over email as normal, and writing more on my website.

Same, even requested it (successfully) from THQ back when I was at Relic

This is one of the first mandatory things I have done at every job for the past 15 years (including at Unity), write in that I have side projects / prior IP and I will be working on them while employed. It has never been an issue.

The greatest lesson I’ve learned over the too many years I’ve been doing this is to compartmentalise the shame I feel over promoting stuff. There are two Mikes: the Mike that thinks posting promo more than twice a day is cringe, and the Mike who wants to keep making games for a living, so fuck it

It worked for sure. I thought of wishlisting twice when you announced, but they you got all pushy and I actually took the time. I’m sad this is an effective play 😂

I am so tired of people who can't code telling me about how AI helps them code to 1% of the ability of a professional, which sure is 10x for them. It's like me telling people that the invention of music theory will make actual musicians obsolete because now I, too, can write chords that sound OK.

Oh just FYI we've crossed the 10K threshold for number of people in the games industry laid off so far this calendar year. only 11 layoff waves shy of the total for 2023. 6 months to go.

Yesterday I celebrating 3 years of Karl Schmidt Consulting! Thanks to everyone for your support in my solopreneur journey. Big things are ahead!

Agreed. UE6 is clearly aimed at Fortnite becoming more like Roblox. This is not a path for developers/studios who want a game engine to make games with. It's a path for making games on Fortnite only.

With the statements made by Unreal about their diehard focus on verse scripting, metaverse, AI, and removing blueprints, I fear they may be having a Unity Runtime Fee moment: Causing so much uncertainty to their userbase, that the userbase reconsiders hitching their ride in the long term.

Bought Titanfall 2 on Steam, trying to play it for the first time. Get an error about "link2ea://"....so I think, I'll start that EA desktop app. I start it, and log in. Run Titanfall 2 again. I get further, now wants me to sign into EA again, with the other instance running?

Console prices are rising, Steam Machine pricing is higher than originally planned. Look at RAM/SSD prices for a new PC. We game developers need to focus on performance and efficiency more than ever. Not just for the games, but our tools.

Unreal Engine 6 thoughts: Blueprints going away. This is an opportunity to maintain support in a branch, since engine source is provided (easier said than done, I know). It's also an opportunity for a 3rd-party solution to continue support. 🤔

Not excited about Verse and the sunsetting of Blueprints. On the whole updates seem UEFN-centric. Who is asking for these things? Small developers? Large developers? Developers that want to make their own experiences, not tied to Fortnite?

Sad that I can't legally buy + play this nor The Path of Neo anymore. I had the PS2 version of the latter but my aging PS2 laser was too weak, wouldn't boot the game. I tried reaching out to WB to do a remaster several times, never heard back

i really love how inscrutable the fucking Enter the Matrix launcher is...what is any of this shit. "allow gamma". "force object lod". force it to what. on? off? min? max? what is meant by w-buffer. what the fuck is Classical FPS

I find the framing of "if you aren't using AI for coding you must be some artisan craftsperson or luddite" really confusing. There are IDEs and lots of automation tools and assistance that have and will continue to be used and evolved. Stuff that is actually efficient, deterministic, and ethical.
