GENERAL MILLS*: To evoke how easily digestible our new cereal is, we shall give it a name that sounds like a euphemism for farts. * (in this scenario, feel free to imagine Gen. Mills as a literal general, a military man)

My new book is out today! Count Me Out: The Best Federal Resignations of 2025 tells the story of last year's tremendous upheaval in the U.S. civil service, all in the words of people who chose to walk away, often at great professional cost. Available wherever books are sold…but not Amazon.

"The thing about it," Dad said on the phone just now when I asked if he remembered this, "is that I had just finished giving a safety lecture: 'You kids should always be careful with knives--' and then BOOM!" And, yes, he did need stitches. My uncle, his brother, drove him to the ER.

One of my earliest-- and, in retrospect, creepiest --Halloween memories is of seeing a trail of red drops on the floor and thinking it must be strawberry juice or jam. Only later did I realize it was blood. My father had sliced his thumb while carving our pumpkin. I think he needed stitches.

Get your pumpkin carving kit *now* before it's later tonight and you convince yourself a steak knife will work just fine, but it won't and you'll be posting on Bluesky saying, "I just lacerated myself carving a pumpkin. CPSC is going to be so disappointed in me :( "

Just this week, I talked with a co-worker about how much I love it that Bill Skarsgård has staked out his territory as a horror weirdo, while Alexander is making it clear that he's a comedy weirdo.

too many guys are bad-weird now, we need more with this kind of good-weird energy

Back in 2019, I stumbled upon the creepshow that was the Wikipedia description of the citrus fruit known as a tangelo. I checked the page again last night and am kind of bummed out that they've largely de-horrified it.

As everyone is complaining about Airbnb today, I'm gonna bring this up again. In my experience as a wheelchair user, Airbnbs are *far, far* less accessible than modern hotels. My sister makes sure to book houses that are listed as accessible, but they never fully are.

BJ's complaints about the Gemstone family's lakehouse being inaccessible to the "differently abled" are the kinds of things I wish I could say when my sister books an Airbnb for a family gathering.

Yes, exactly! And even if there are accessibility laws that rideshare and houseshare businesses are theoretically supposed to follow, individual drivers and homeowners don't always follow them in practice.

Requirements that guests do extensive cleanup contribute to Airbnbs' inaccessibility, relative to hotels. I would never book an Airbnb for myself if I were traveling alone.

(There are similar problems with rideshare services. I've had Uber and Lyft drivers cancel on me when I tell them I'll need them to fold my wheelchair and put it in the trunk.)

S3.E24: "To Serve Man" Darkly hilarious, but/and wildly implausible in many ways. For one: How could the humans translate the alien book's title without having to consider which meaning of "serve" is at play? Is the same exact double entendre coincidentally possible in the Kanamit language?

Katherine Duke reposted

No. No, that's not -- Look. You want to put Zach Braff in a cop movie, he needs to be partnered with Donald Faison and they're trying to solve the mystery of what happened to their pants.

In the spirit of the phrase "resident alien for tax purposes" and me thinking Resident Alien sounds like a movie, add "for tax purposes" to the end of a movie title: That Thing You Do For Tax Purposes!

I wanted a male best friend so badly when I was a kid-- I think in part because there were so many cross-gender best-friendships in kids' media: Ramona & Howie Clarissa & Sam Vada & Thomas Jay Leslie & Jess Big Pete & Ellen Little Pete & Nona

None of this is to say that I consider myself a Special Snowflake today. If anything, I'm chagrined at how boring my life, work, and tastes are in middle age. What I mean is just that I grew up "special" (by more than one meaning of that label) and still bear obvious outward markers of difference.

Last year, sorting through old papers at my parents' house, I found a psychologist's report from when I was 2 that said, "Katherine is both a gifted child and a handicapped child." Thus, in both special-ed preschool & mainstream public school, I always felt like the odd one out, in good & bad ways.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

Perhaps the closest I've ever come to feeling like I fit in was when I started spending summers, as a teen, at the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped-- i.e., the Institute for Quirky Disabled Show-Offs. 😉

I was weird in elementary/middle/high school because of my wheelchair and crutches and stuff-- and because I was an overachieving, nerdy teacher's pet. The latter was, in part, my way of compensating for the former. I've heard this described in disability circles as the "Supercrip" phenomenon.

As I grew up and went to a fancy college (where everyone was academically impressive), I gradually became less invested in being The Most Gifted Kid™️. But I was still the only wheelchair user. To this day, I carry no expectation of ever fitting in anywhere. And, again, this is both good and bad.

I was weird in preschool because I was more advanced than the other disabled kids, academically and verbally. (My mom says I told her once, "I like school, but it would be nice to go to school with some kids who can talk.")
