Let’s Gooooooo! Midterm elections are here! Please make your voice heard by voting! Thank you, King County Elections, for making it so easy for citizens to participate in our democracy. I love receiving my ballot in the mail and dropping it in a box on my bike-commute to work
“On ChatGPT, rating a response with a thumbs up or down can make the entire associated conversation eligible for training even if you’ve opted out”

It makes me really happy when organizations reward outstanding service. It makes me even more happy that someone as deserving as Erin Sheets won this award! Thank you, Erin, for all you have done for the biophysics community and the @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social!
Today (Oct 20) is the last day to donate to the UW Combined Fund Drive and get a $5 gift-card back... but you can keep making other donations all year! Today I donated to the Queen Anne Helpline, inspired by @joeveyera.bsky.social's dedication to help our Seattle neighbors
Hey UW colleagues -- the 2026 charitable giving season is here! Together, we've given on average $1.5M/year to the Combined Fund Drive. Plus, if you give a new or increased donation of $5 to ANY charity on the list by Oct 20, you'll get a $5 card for coffee. Details here: hr.uw.edu/cfd/2026/09/...
At the end of the work day, tired, empty-eyed Londoners mechanically eat bags of crisps outside at bus stops in the same way that tired, empty-eyed Berliners mechanically eat pretzels outside on train platforms
honored to receive the community engagement award this year 😊 we made an onboarding handbook for *ALL* postdocs at Cornell, and we organize monthly professional development workshops for postdocs across departments - truly a team effort!!

To my Nederlands friends (old AND new): @pinkmartiniband.bsky.social is playing in Eindhoven on Friday, October 16, and there are still tickets! You can bring the family! Highly recommended. I know your agendas are usually set 3 weeks in advance, but this is worth an exception! pinkmartini.com/tour/
I was joking with my daughter that no magnets are allowed in this café, and, in an even better joke, she asked if I thought the outdoor seating counted as part of a multipole expansion. Totally cracked me up!
I had a truly lovely time at NWO Biophysics 2026. Great questions from trainees, in both the keynote and master class. Very grateful to @drjorine.bsky.social for inviting & introducing me, Daan Brinks for chairing the program committee, and Anastasia Vinogradova for expert organization. Plus, socks!
Looking forward to tomorrow’s NWO #Biophysics symposium, and especially also @kaytrue.bsky.social keynote lecture: “Two extremes of liquid-liquid phase separation in membranes: minimal, artificial membranes with two lipids versus living, biological membranes with hundreds of components” #LLPS ..

Very excited to share that my department at @uwchemistry.bsky.social will be hiring an Assistant Professor of Chemistry! Come be my colleague at the University of Washington in Seattle! It is a wonderful city filled with wonderful scientists. Details in the link: ap.washington.edu/ahr/academic...
Come be my colleague at the University of Washington in Seattle! There are TWO tenure-track positions in Genome Sciences. @maitreya.bsky.social wouldn't ever say it, but she is a fantastic Chair and leader – you'll be in good hands
Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.
Hoping legal challenges at least delay this. It's sadly impressive that someone involved knows the things most likely to damage the US scientific enterprise
The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week.
It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.
Reminder! THIS IS TOMORROW, September 15, 11am EST. Please join us! Details for how are in the ALT text of the original post's image!
Also, due to some logistic-snafu a wrong Zoom link was sent, but you all received the correct one later by email, and will again receive it prior to the webinar!
📣 I am super thrilled to announce that during “Emerging Science Week” the MSAF subgroup of the Biophysical Society will run a webinar with three awesome speakers on “Lipids Feeling the World.” More info, including how you sign up, is contained in the ALT text of the image!

Reposting this ongoing search (any discipline of biology) for an Assistant to Associate level colleague in the Division of Basic Sciences at Fred Hutch.
Great city, great colleagues, great core facilities, great trainees.
Come be our colleague. I have been in this Division for 27 years (4 as a postdoc and 23 as a PI). It is an amazing place to work, collaborate, and be inspired. If you are applying to be an Assistant or Associate Professor this Fall, don't miss this deadline.
Hey UW colleagues and alums -- for tomorrow's Apple Cup, UW and WSU are competing to see which university can raise the largest number of individual donations towards their student food pantries. I just donated. Want to join me? Let's help UW students!

NIH's Aug 2026 proposal would scrap exact scores and percentiles for three broad bins (top = top 25%). With funding rates at 5% or lower, too much then rides on administrative discretion. It devalues peer review and is a deterrent to engage. Tell NIH before Oct 13.

This morning, I sat down with my coffee and started reading the news, got depressed, then switched to this delightful public lecture by Mo Das (@physbee.bsky.social) on percolation theory to describe cartilage. My day got a lot better
Delta's "12Status" is back for the 2026 Seahawks season. Washington residents ages 18 and older can earn one mile for every Seahawks passing yard during all home and away games, along with priority boarding on flights from Sea-Tac, and a team store discount on the 12th of the month.

I picked up a copy of this book at this year's Cottrell Scholar Conference, and it is full of interesting tips from scientists in all sorts of leadership positions at their institutions. It is helpful to see the range of opinions and perspectives. The book is available for FREE as a pdf! Freeeeee!
Leadership doesn't wait for a title. RCSA's new free guide "Lead Better: Disrupt Barriers, and Have an Impact," written by 17 Cottrell Scholars, shows faculty how to lead from anywhere in the institution.

@sarahmackattack.bsky.social -- I know you've got a TON on your plate right now (and always), but if you happen to know someone off the top of your head who is in the northeast US and would love one or two cats, I'm sure this person would appreciate it. And if not, no worries!
Good ideas in this thread for any conference organizers out there...
Some of my favorite swag has been umbrellas and calendars (big ones, with lots of writing space). About half the T-shirts I own are from conferences, and they can be great if they are not entirely unisex (read: men’s) size large
Reminder: the deadline is this evening to submit comments about devastating changes that would allow political appointees to kill NSF grants at whim. I submitted mine. It was fast. I re-wrote my OMB letter with "Aligning the NSF’s GFA with OMB 2 CFR § 200 will harm the US because..."
I initially found the urgency odd… didn’t we already submit OMB comments? Yep. And now the NSF is being targeted to impose OMB’s bad rules! The new comment period ends THIS MONDAY, 11:59 ET. You can recycle your OMB text. Include Docket #NSF-2026-OTR-0001. There’s help! Just click through the thread

My comment on NSF-2026-OTR-0001, NSF's obsequious gutting of their own procedures, replacing them with OMB's proposed rules undermining federal grantmaking with their ideological agenda.
Need guidance on commenting? @standupforscience.net has you covered: fight2win.standupforscience.net#NSF
