When a sitting representative refers to the Super Bowl halftime show as “pornography,” people should use that to reflect on how they and other representatives are simultaneously working to ban, censor, and restrict “pornography” and what that actually means

In response to Iowa's vague & punitive "age appropriate" school materials law in 2023, schools immediately removed over 3,000 books. Of the most-removed: 6 center Black American experiences 7 center experiences of women 2 are dystopian critiques of authoritarianism 1 is antiwar/militarism

"In an era of intense partisanship, nationalized elections, and low trust in elites and institutions, the electoral benefits of moderation are at best small and inconsistent, at worst counterproductive ... not a reliable path to electoral victory or to meeting the existential threats to democracy."

I hereby declare my intent to petition the government to allow me to file my lobbying declarations in the form of emojis. I am enduring too much hardship from the lack of a "🤣" declaration option.

Alex Pretti’s last words were “are you ok?” said the woman next to him who ICE also pepper sprayed in the face.

Moving forward this will be a line in the sand for me. Vote for funding the jackboots, and I won’t be voting for you.

To quote one source: “They’re terrified of being labeled anti–law enforcement. They want this to go away so they can talk about the cost of living more. Problem is, it’s not going away.” prospect.org/2026/01/21/j...

Senate Democrats absolutely have to shut the govt down to stop this ICE insanity in the Twin Cities. This is not sustainable & cannot be normalized. Any Democratic vote to provide money to the thugs who are brutalizing this community is a grave betrayal to the people here. Accountability can't wait.

It’s a lawless totalitarian occupation of an American city.

Ana Marie Cox@anamariecox.com

I know people on Bsky know this but I hope it filters out: The feds are OCCUPYING the Twin Cities. This is a blockade, a siege. They are shutting down economic and civic activity. They are conducting "papers please" stops. They are criminalizing being a bystander/witness. You could be next.

And now its time for everyone's favorite game, the Supidest Bill of the Day. Today we have a bill obliterating checks and balances, because courts being able to say a law is unconstitutional is very inconvenient to a legislature that would like to pass unconstitutional laws.

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.

Jerome Powell: "This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation."

Those who see that they can make you believe atrocities are okay or even good because of what the law says, have every incentive to make the laws atrocious.

Can't believe I have to say this but don't use slurs! Why would it be acceptable at any event, let alone a faith-focused event, to use that kind of language? My youth pastor would've kicked my butt outta the youth group real quick for that kind of behavior.

desmoinesregister.comGOP Rep. Nancy Mace praises Iowa ending trans civil rights, uses anti-trans slur in CliveIn Iowa, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., praised the law removing gender identity protections from the Iowa Civil Rights Act and repeated an anti-trans slur.

The Des Moines Register has been apparently billing me twice a month for the same online subscription. FYI: if you accept a promotion they don't bump the price down to the new promotional price, they simply bill you for the existing subscription AND the promotion.

Heaven forbid a museum contain something that makes the Dear Leader sad. We must always work to praise Him.

“Separate but equal.” This is the sequel.

The Trump administration cut a clause from federal contracting rules that had been on the books since the 1960s: Companies are no longer explicitly prohibited from having segregated facilities.

Shout out to the Iowa state house press corps. Those folks are super knowledgeable and always give fair coverage despite being pulled in every direction at once. Not so in every state. I appreciate their commitment.

I regret to inform you that the absolute most deranged bill of the session, the chemtrails bill, has cleared the funnel. I was quite fond of all the nanotechnology in the snow, but alas, no more. Now I will be forced to use all 5 Gs in order to get my vaccine microchips working again.

Oh good now we're threatening Sheriffs with felonies if they don't agree with our views on federalism. That probably doesn't portend anything particularly menacing and awful. Probably fine.

Related to previous post: the State of Exception is an explicitly dictatorial theory developed by Schmitt to allow the Nazis to come to power and obliterate civil and constitutional rights.

Here's the new general counsel for Trump's Office of Personnel Management basically saying "Carl Schmitt was right about everything." Who is Carl Schmitt you may ask? Well...

I’ll be blunt about this: If you are in the business of talking about the law and the Constitution and you do not either (1) condemn this OMB memo or (2) offer a compelling argument as to its legality, I will never again take you seriously.

nytimes.comRead the Memo Pausing Federal Grants and LoansThe White House’s Office of Management and Budget issued a memo ordering a temporary halt to “all federal financial assistance,” potentially paralyzing a vast swath of federal programs.

It's always so cringey when people talk about "owning" their children. Heard that today several times during the homeschooling sub. Children aren't property ya weirdos.

The CFPB has been the only way I've ever been able to get student loan providers to do what they're supposed to be doing. Gutting both that and the DoE will put borrowers in a truly Kafkaesque position.

As the elite media pumps up Trump & the Republicans for speaking to the "working class" Trump's Co-President Musk is out there pushing to eliminate govt agencies like Consumer Finance Protection Bureau - that is focused on protecting financial interest of that working class. Make it make sense.

I assume that’s a feature, not a bug. People using the wrong restroom for their gender presentation will result in hysteria, violence, and chaos, which can then be used further to demonize trans people and further restrict them. Exactly what Nancy Mace wants.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

I’ll say here what I’ve said about state versions of such rules: Proponents are quickly going to realize they’re a lot more uncomfortable forcing people to use the wrong restroom for their gender presentation.

not to be too harsh but what’s the use of transgender representation in congress if they will immediately give in to fascist demands. genuinely what’s the purpose to this at all here
