As always I sometimes don’t really understand how much they mean to me until it jumps out and whacks me over the head. I had made my peace that I wasn’t going to see them again and that that long phase of my life was over. 1/3

"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers. "He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

The banks say they’re overtaxed. The TUC says they’re undertaxed. We did the sums across nine countries, and we're going to annoy *everyone*. The UK isn’t a high-tax outlier. There *is* a case for increasing bank tax. But it comes with risks - and could hit households. 🧵:

In reality, most non-executive jobs end up demanding 2x the stated time and effort. You certainly don’t do non-exec jobs in the public sector for the money. Still highly rewarding though - like pro-bono directorships and trusteeships.

THREAD. A *big* ask, I know, but I'm trying to seek out a US publisher for this book this week & any further orders from Blackwell's will REALLY help that cause. Amazingly, they do free international delivery, which makes it cheaper than buying many books locally. blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...

Also, 2000+ readers in North America have now bought (via import) this book, which still does not have a publisher in the US or Canada, and which I was told confidently by the British publishing industry had no chance of having an overseas audience due to being "too British".

It will only come if forced on Labour via a hung parliament: they are not a progressive or liberal party.

Reports over the weekend show the Labour establishment is fighting against electoral reform. If Andy Burnham is serious about changing our politics, it will take real courage – and we need it more than ever.

The contrast with this headline in the SAME EDITION is telling. Clearly women must be protected at all costs against the threat of an ill trans woman in hospital bed - but a desire for women to have some segregated time in the gym free from weightlifting men is POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD!!!

Mark Grimshaw@markgrimshawtism.bsky.social

I actually think the use of the word “finally” is so telling as to the role our heavily right-wing media plays in our politics. Sources like The Telegraph have been pushing successive governments for trans-exclusionary policy for years. They’ve got what they wanted. This is now their victory lap.

Hugely entertaining

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC

I think a lot of people need to take a long hard look at themselves and the smug “banker bashing” that went on at that time, and acknowledge that if there was anything more to this than a witch hunt, it was likely a scapegoating conspiracy to cover up public sector culpability.

A classic case of very muddled thinking. Drax ‘s problem is not its CO2 emissions - by definition wood is not a fossil fuel, and if power stations are fuelled by sustainably produced wood on a plantation or (even better) coppice rotation, you have a closed carbon cycle, powered by the sun 1/2

Prem Sikka@premnsikka.bsky.social

Drax’s planned datacentre to burn 4.9m tonnes of wood to produce its electricity, nearly double the CO2 emissions of all flights from London Gatwick airport. Drax, a highly profitable company gets subsidies to burn wood and produce electricity How many lives will it ruin?

Drax’s problem is that it has repeatedly failed to demonstrate the sustainability of its wood supply, and appreciable proportions of this have come from old growth forest. Even this might still be carbon neutral (if the forest is allowed to regrow), but the ecological damage is enormous. 2/2

As well as a Britannia Magic Dome, Tories will build a Halo Array, a Stargate, a Dark Tower, and a Death Star - named respectively Spirit of the Blitz, Maggie's Opening, Boris-Dûr, and Churchill's Clacker - funded by sales of a new wellness smoothie made with carrot, ginger, and poor people's tears.

How does AI deliver decades of jumping up and down with other sweaty blokes in a New Model Army mosh pit while they bang out angry banger after angry banger?
