📢 We are excited to announce our latest work on oocyte meiotic checkpoint signalling @crick.ac.uk Led by George Sioutas, the work allowed us to delineate the early steps of the checkpoint signalling program of pre- and postnatal oocytes 🐭🧬https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.10.13.758765v2
🧬 Mark your calendars! Our EMBO Workshop "Chromatin evolution from molecules to genomes" is coming to St Feliu de Guíxols (Spain), 4–7 Oct 2027 🌊 Amazing programme!

Nuclear speckles are “hot”, but how do they actually sequester mRNPs?
We find that stalled mRNPs are retained in nuclear speckles by a combinatorial RNA-binding protein network.

In one inbred strain of laboratory mice, late-life treatment with a GLP-1 drug extends lifespan. This effect might be more than just a consequence of calorie restriction.

Congratulations to Yuping Li on being awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Grant. In her project, she will investigate how bacteria detect and defend themselves against giant viruses known as jumbophages.🧪 @yuping-li.bsky.social@unibas.ch@erc.europa.eu#ERCStartingGrant#research#lifesciences
Some exciting news: I'm joining the University of Lausanne @unil.bsky.social@dbc-unil.bsky.social as an Assistant Professor next month 🎉 My group will work on context-aware deep learning for protein structure, interaction & design. Postdoc and PhD openings coming soon - keep an eye out!
What regulates the urge to sleep? William Joo and colleagues identified brain regions that reflect how long mice have been awake. Strikingly, inhibiting one of these regions reduces sleep by 70%, without the major behavioral deficits associated with sleep deprivation. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
⬇️ Check out this preprint from our floor friends @mariahondele.bsky.social , with a small (but mighty) fruit fly 🪰 contribution from our team / Drosophila whisperer Martin @biozentrum.unibas.ch
🚀 New preprint 🥳 Fantastic work by our recent PhD graduate Daan !
How are mRNPs remodeled as they exit the nucleus?
We identify PAIP1 as a factor that promotes exchange of the nuclear poly(A)-binding protein PABPN1 for cytoplasmic PABPC1, coupling mRNA export to cytoplasmic mRNP maturation.
Job posting: Associate Professor in behavioral ecology and cultural evolution within the Department of Ecology and Evolution (DEE) at the University of Lausanne. Deadline for applications is 30.09.2026:

New preprint 📢 Thrilled to share our long-awaited work on the role of RSX in marsupial X-inactivation. This was a huge team effort over the years, led by @aureliencourtois.bsky.social@sermenchero.bsky.social Sugako Ogushi and Waz Varsally, that allowed us to set up genome editing in opossum embryos
1/ Very excited to share the first publication from my lab!
In this work, we developed an efficient strategy to precisely mutate mammalian histone genes in their native genomic context using CRISPR prime editing: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Excited to be able to advertise 1x postdoc and 2x technician positions to join my group in Cambridge working on an exciting ARIA funded project to help bring a plant artificial chromosome into existence! Reposts very welcome please 🙏 (1/2)
New Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate Professor position in Climate #Biophysics! Join our international research community to explore fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying climate-relevant biological processes.
Apply by 7 Sept 2026! www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/de/open-posi...
There is more to transcriptional readthrough than meets the eye, and it could even provide a therapeutic opportunity in cancer. Check out our new perspective, inspired by recent work from Neugebauer and Grzechnik labs! #RNABiology#RNASky#Epigenetics
Studying gene ends is becoming even more fascinating! Curious why? Read our News & Views "Transcriptional readthrough progresses from incidental byproduct to therapeutic opportunity" inspired by the recent publication by Podszywałow-Bartnicka and @karlaneugebauer.bsky.social@natsmb.nature.com
What if an embryo made immune cells before it finished building the tissue they usually come from?
In our new preprint, we show that annual killifish embryos specify neutrophils before germ layers are fully resolved.

Huge thanks to my PI, @ohnolog.bsky.social !

My first PhD paper is out in Nucleic Acids Research! We describe "Ab-trapping" - an antibody artifact that distorts assays relying on antibody diffusion (microscopy, CUT&Tag, CUT&RUN). The revisions made the story much stronger. Check it out!

Our evil ORFeome paper is out! In collaboration with @alex-stark.bsky.social, we screened ~4,000 viral proteins and secreted effectors from bacteria and parasites, covering hundreds of diverse pathogens, for phenotypes in human cells.
Happy to finally share that I will be starting my independent group at the @fmiscience.bsky.social in Feb 2027 in a vibrant new environment. We will use integrative in situ structural cell biology methods to investigate ciliary structure and dynamics in several model (and non-model 👀) systems!!
A big preprint from my group!
Muller Elements are considered to be conserved in flies. We tested it by reconstructing the ancestral dipteran karyotype using 340 chromosomal genomes and suprise suprise, they're not...

Happy to share our preprint!
Using massively parallel reporter assays, single-molecule imaging, deep learning and cryo-EM, we decode the sequence requirements for translation initiation and describe the “extended translation initiation sequence” (eTIS) that modulates start codon recognition.
🧵👇
For 40 years the 8-nt ‘Kozak Sequence’ was thought to mark sites of translation initiation. In a new study, we revise this model by identifying an ~80-nt sequence—the extended Translation Initiation Sequence (eTIS)— that guides ribosomes to correct start sites. 🧵

Two new papers 📖 from our lab 1️⃣ What is epigenetics (and why X inactivation is?) rdcu.be/fhzSz and 2️⃣ A Baculovirus-based tool to express any gene of interest with high efficiency in Anopheles cells rdcu.be/fhzTy
We are excited to be recruiting into 3 Associate Professorship's in @oxfordbiochemistry.bsky.social. Come join us as a colleague and benefit from our vibrant and multidisciplinary environment. Reach out to me if you have any questions. Please repost! (tinyurl.com/48deybuu) (tinyurl.com/4pdvjaft).

New Preprint www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... from our lab - work by (now) Dr. Feyza Polat Haas with fabulous contributions from many. We show that mammals have a 💪 POWER-Spliceoeome in the 🧠 optimized for metabolic functions. This happens because SNRPB (SmB) is replaced by its paralogue SNRPN (SmN).
For once an article about the "how to get to Rome" and not "Rome" itself. Collaboration with my "partner-in-crime" @felibas.bsky.social has been a key ingredient of my research over the years. Sara Miller at Molecular Cell spoke with us of how we got there and what we think about collaborations.
Stunning lecture („Antrittsvorlesung“) by @hilgerslab.bsky.social - friend, mentor and scientific inspiration at the very same time 😀 Happy that our paths join again in #Basel
So happy to see this paper out! Not only important for evolution that we have a conserved essential locus without sequence similarity 🫨but hopefully also a tool also for conservation for the numerous Hymenopteran species that share this sex locus 🐝 🐜
