You see this in Russia under Putin and Turkey under Erdogan. I see it in myself. You turn off the TV, focus on your own life, and try to shut out what feels like an increasingly hopeless situation that you have no power to control or affect.

When people experience nothing but personalist politics, their political imagination atrophies. Israelis vote for the party whose head they want as PM, and don't notice that they have no political apparatus to get things done. So they get despondent and turn inward, away from political engagement.

As much as internal party democracy was often a fig leaf, removing it entirely has been disastrous. Many Knesset parties these days are what's known as "mood parties": one guy (it is always a guy) who wants to be PM plus a dozen of his buddies whom no one has heard of.

This should have ended 2 years ago. It is SUPER easy to screen herds for the virus (bulk milk testing). Infected cattle clear the virus after a few weeks. The outbreak could have been stopped (and still can be) if we had the will to enforce strict quarantines. We don’t. 9/

Meanwhile, pro-democracy, pro-Europe protesters in Tbilisi, Georgia, are tonight nearing their 700th consecutive day of protest against the pro-Russian government. They haven't missed a single day in the last 23 months.

Re last repost, a lot of Bluesky ppl like the El-Sayed talks. I have to tell you, a lot of voters out there don't. This is the race that has the biggest difference b/w my real world contacts & the online adulation. If you have influence in Michigan, by all means, use it.

my controversial opinion is: I don't think Simone Biles or Suni Lee should come back for USA gymnastics. (You could actually make a stronger case for Lee...even though Biles is the GOAT...because Suni's strengths on beam and bars are right now weaknesses for the USA.) But just like in politics,

silver medal for Team USA in women's gymnastics --without their most decorated gymnast --& actually would have taken gold if we didn't have a fall on beam dismount. Gold: China Silver: USA Bronze: Japan (ending long drought in women's gymnastics)

Today's the 39th anniversary of "Black Monday" when the Dow fell 22.61% in a single day. Issues at the time: "concerns over inflation, a weakening dollar, rising oil and commodity prices, protectionism, tensions between the United States and Iran, and the potential end to a long economic expansion."

a norwegian on Threads posted this and i just don’t know how much more clearly we can emphasize how much Americans are being ripped off by our system which is built to concentrate wealth at the top

Some bobbles on beam & uncharacteristic weirdness of floor, but nothing major & nothing tragic. Team USA women are still in the hunt for a medal on Wednesday.

Hezly Rivera, widely thought to be among the favorites in the World's women's all-around & a cornerstone of Team USA who puts up big scores has withdrawn from competition due to ankle injury. A huge blow. A very "newsy" World Championships. Too much so.

(I actually ranked Claire Pease ahead of Rivera at this exact moment, but Rivera is the more experienced, more decorated athlete for sure.) Team USA will have to fight to get on the podium for Team finals. That was always true but...

People want to say the war on Iran is Bibi’s fault or all Trump but really it is Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA)’s fault, insofar as he’s a typical Republican legislator who supports this war of aggression with all its disastrous consequences to the hilt. Like 99% of GOP legislators. It’s a GOP war.

The war we advocated for is predictably a mess, but the only reasonable course of action is to pointlessly continue waging it.

Folks are willing to accept this on the individual level, but not on the state-building level Meaning, a security Leviathan--an empire of punishment & surveillance--that "makes the choice of a strongman more terrifying, and the divisions over issues like immigration more painful and consequential"

liberalcurrents.comThe Security LeviathanThe American path in state-building is heavily skewed towards security and control.
Sean Casten@seancasten.bsky.social

The US doesn't have a disproportionate share of mental health issues, or disaffected young men, or anything else that will be scapegoated this morning. We just have way too many guns. We can deal with that, or we can keep living in fear. Everything else is horrible, terrible, frightening noise.

If anything, IMO, the state-building story is more urgent, more likely to endanger people, & overtly (I'd say riotously) antithetical to the vision of the country's founders.

this outcome is 1) anticipated by research in the field 2) true of militant interventions of all kinds, including lawful ones that never caught your attention before this administration 3) the kind of thing that was a building block for my white paper on the drug war.
