β€œOf all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged. If you are seeking a Christmas present for someone you really don’t like, give them a copy.” Its critics, on the other hand, were less kind…..

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 88/ Sinners I resisted giving this 5 stars on release because I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting swept up in the hype of it. Rewatching it easily justifies the perfect score. boxd.it/gXBS8r

boxd.itA β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… review of Sinners (2025)The film touches on so many things and for each single thread you could remove it and the film would still be great but all of them together is what makes this such a magnificent tapestry.

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 85/ The Omen It's been decades since I watched this and I had forgotten how good the OG was. Many have imitated it but few have succeeded in matching it. boxd.it/gWFn9R

boxd.itA β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…Β½ review of The Omen (1976)It's cultural significance can't be overstated but what surprised me most about this was the technical aspects. Some of the shots and camera work, especially the wind scenes scenes shot in Bishop's Pa...

I'm having a recurring pre-dream? The vision that fills my head before I drift to sleep, has repeatedly turned towards travelling at night in preindustrial times. A solo traveller urgently makes their way through the dark wooded lanes and byways with the final sputters of a flaming torch.

Night after night I fall asleep watching this unknown figure make their way deeper into the darkness that surrounds them on all sides. They show no signs of sleepiness themselves and their urgency shows no intent of stopping to make camp. They just press on at a determined yet unhurried pace.

They are heading to not from, but towards what I do not know. There is no particular peril to be afraid of other than the everyday dangers of the time that any traveller would be concerned with. Maybe tonight I'll find out more...

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 79/ Shin Godzilla So much media is zoomed in to focus on the small human scale experience of huge events, here we are distanced and being shown the bigger picture. I wish someone would give the same treatment to a zombie outbreak film. boxd.it/gUuJmt

boxd.itA β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…Β½ review of Shin Godzilla (2016)The cinematic equivalent of management games and I'm so down for it. When I saw this on release I was comparing it to the two big American movies and found myself completely baffled. Now I can appreci...

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 76/ Godzilla -1.0/C The black and white version works so well. Watching this again I am now adamant that I need to see the new one on the highest screen I can. boxd.it/gTNHgx

boxd.itA β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… review of Godzilla Minus One (2023)The monochrome version is magnificent. I loved it the first time round but this time the human emotional elements came through so much more strongly. It had me in tears multiple times.

Fun fact: my first pitch for Someone You Can Build A Nest In was "John Carpenter's The Thing invades Beauty and the Beast."

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 77/ Beauty and the Beast (1978) If you've read Someone You Can Build a Nest In by @wiswell.bsky.social you must agree that this is the masion that Shesheshen lives in. Definitely not Disney but not the masterpiece I was promised either boxd.it/gTYnGd

Fun fact about being a writer: every moment someone isn't telling you your writing is good, you assume your writing is bad. So this was a nice way to start the day.

Just finished @raynewman.bsky.social’s Intervals of Darkness. Really good stuff. Strange and unsettling, and often very funny. Lovely sense of place and atmosphere

πŸŽƒ Spooktober '26 πŸ“½οΈ 72/ Cure Despite falling asleep watching this last night I went back to finish it tonight and it was well worth it even if I can't tell exactly what happened. boxd.it/gSbLIb

boxd.itA β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… review of Cure (1997)Unlike anything I've seen. It's villain is detached and almost ambivalent throughout most of the film in a way that makes him even more sinister. Answering every question with a question and constantl...

It's cinnamon season! I'm finding myself drawn to anything with extra cinnamon in it. Chocolate, drinks, candles... if it's got cinnamon in I'm having it!

I'm terrible at following people on here. I find myself interacting with people for ages and then realise I've never followed them. I think it's because I made the mistake of following everyone in the early days of Twitter and then always regretting how cluttered it became. Now I'm more choosy.
