Am I nonbinary? Or maybe I don’t have a gender, but I’m like a trickster fae? Everybody sees something and it’s mostly foreign and ill-fitting and sometimes it’s useful.

The thing that was a red flag for many, including me, is the upscale changed Kurt's use of "opiate" to "opioid", which is a word nobody could recall being in popular use in the 1990s. At some point everything will get transmogrified through some unnecessary AI lens.

Krista Benson reposted

Somebody posted a bit of Kurt's journals in the Nirvana subreddit today and wanted to know if it was real. A bunch of people said no, but it WAS (somebody photocopied the original page for proof) and it turns out the bit posted was AI upscaled and the upscale changed words.

We say porn is the canary in the coal mine of expression for a reason. This is another reason. The push to shut human labor and compensation out of the market and shift it to AI is designed to exclusively benefit tech oligarchs. It's coming fast and hard for porn, as it will for everybody else.

Jiz Lee@jizlee.bsky.social

"AI is the only ethical porn." Um, just how do you think the AI was trained? It's all theft. That's not 'guilt-free'... that's WORSE. And it's not 'real' sex, so it's allowed on social. In app stores. Sex workers get fucked while tech bros make cash. Anything to avoid paying women, I guess?

When I was a stringer with the LA Time in Jerusalem, my correspondent called big, round numbers "metaphors," because no one was standing at the entrance to the protest or the graveyard with a counter. Estimates are educated guesses, not mathematical facts.

Krista Benson reposted

I am famously (because I keep repeating it) an American-Israeli Jew, and I feel it's important to note that yes, "74,000" is a largely magic number. "Magic" because 1) round numbers always are 2) Israel always lies about casualties 3) we still don't know how many bodies remain under the rubble

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

THIS SHIT. This right fucking here. They want us to give up. They’re fucking counting on it.

I said this in a thread last night and in a thousand threads before it, but you really are doing the work of those who would destroy democracy and the rule of law when you are a doomer. You can be aware of — and vigorously oppose — the lawlessness of this administration without insisting on doom.

Anyway, happy First Monday everybody, this Supreme Court term is going to be an absolute nightmare, just like they will continue to be until we decide enough is enough and get serious about court reform.

Being a stupid “change leader” in my university is the most thankless ass job I gave myself. I was accidentally perceived as efficient and now I have to do work that people mostly resent me for.

AI and its chips and data centers are the only thing keeping the stock market in the black right now. He doesn't want his 20-car pileup to get even worse as gas and grocery prices soar. He’s putting his short term political interests over the huge risk AI poses.

Krista Benson reposted

We need to be absolutely clear. Donald Trump is trying to forestall any meaningful limit on AI development, which even the people developing it say has a serious chance of dooming humanity, for one reason. The midterms.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Rewatching Nashville after the death of Hayden Panettiere is a VERY different experience. More painful, more relatable. But also, Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere are a FORCE on screen together.

O hey Reminder that in (homophobic) '94 as Dookie was blowing up, Green Day picked queercore Pansy Division to open for them + a lot of venues pressured them to drop them as openers -- Green Day told the venues they wouldn't play if PD didn't - and the venues (mostly? all?) backed down. huh.

IMO, we need a wholesale revaluation of faculty scholarship, like they do with currency, because the amount of scholarship expected of job candidates is also out of whack. Whether this is a back-formation from the tenure book IDK, but essentially needing a completed ms for hiring isn't good either.

The whole thread, but especially this 👇. Teaching is not simply content delivery, and almost none of the "let's put AI in education" discourse acknowledges that fundamental reality. Probably because it's emanating from everyone except actual teachers.

there is no AI without the human, in any sense 2/n bsky.app/profile/oliv...

Something I hinged on to get to this what I describe: the Marxian fetishisation of artefacts is so complete in the case of AI that not only do we somehow conclude machines think, but we accept for them to think, speak, draw instead of us, while also thinking these are (expressions of) our thoughts.

Hey, so based on what other people have said, and what I have now myself experienced, it appears to me that publishers are, um, how do I say this... Not doing a good job (or possibly any job) of checking to see if rights have reverted on a work before claiming them in the settlement.
