Being the first to make an important discovery, also known as a eureka moment, eludes most of us. But can benefit many.

"I didn't count on winning the Nobel Prize until it happened, and it might never have happened." Medicine laureate Bruce Beutler reflects on the reasons for becoming a scientist. Beutler shared the 2011 medicine prize for discoveries concerning the activation of innate immunity.

"School was not easy for me." Medicine laureate Carol Greider achieved success in molecular biology in the same way she overcame dyslexia as a child: with persistence and creativity. Finding it difficult to read the traditional way, she taught herself to memorise words and letter order.

This is very worrying. Many autoimmune diseases occur far more often in women than men; the ratio for lupus is about 9:1. Yes, they can be complex disorders and can share symptoms and clinical features but they can also be life threatening. Delay is diagnosis can be a serious issue.

Migratory immune cells mediating tissue protection is becoming a hot topic. Equally hot is the reverse response involving migratory cells mediating tissue damage distant from the primary site of inflammation. Mucosal sites play an important role in both good and bad responses.

How does the body balance immune response and tissue damage during a parasite infection? A new #ScienceImmunology study in helminth-infected mice shows dermal gdTcells that migrate to the lung activate immune pathways that protect tissues. https://scim.ag/4hrcdvD

Congratulations to our first Nobel Prize laureate of 2026 🎉 Early this morning Karl Deisseroth found out he was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He seems very happy with the news!

Yep, its true. Reading is really important and writing (grants, papers) comes next because you can't do either well without knowledge. But networking is also essential. Not only do people need to know who you are but you need to know people. Rub elbows with the best and brightest. 🧪

Given the outrageous, dangerous, and outright false statements made about how the polio (and other) vaccine was a "fraud" (at the Children's Health Defense conference), here's a reminder of what a massive success it was. RFK Jr. & his minions must be stopped from destroying the US healthcare system.

When you can, devote a little of your time to this. It will be worth it. 🧪

This is such a wonderful summary of vaccination

Jim Alwine@jimalwine.bsky.social

It’s an amazing thing about viruses, if you have no immunity to them they will kick the shit out of you. Sure immunity will develop as the infection goes on, but in that time the virus will damage you and possibly kill you. But a vaccination gives you immunity without the hurt, or death.
