I have been detained by Israeli security forces all day. Along with with MPs Clive Lewis, Lara Bird, MSP Kate Nevans, former MP Sam Tarry and campaigners from across the world, we were turned back because they don’t want anyone seeing their ethnic cleansing.

Hugely consequential election results in Brazil and Serbia last night. With the mid-terms also looking disastrous for Trump the global Fascist wave might be ebbing. And with youth uprisings exploding across Europe room is opening for a left response to 2027's accelerating crises.

@kmilb.bsky.social, @kaiheron.bsky.social developed an excellent framework for how socialisation can be achieved through Public–Common Partnerships, with the vision of “setting in motion a self-expanding circuit of radical democratic self-governance.” www.in-abundance.org/reports/publ...

A genuinely exhilarating conversation on Pep Guardiola and how football tactics evolve which moves through the ideas of Hegel, Koselleck, Marx, Mark Fisher, and Derrida to do so. All delivered in a warm, funny and unpretentious manner. Superb. Listen to this and buy Jon's book!

The first hint from the government that this climate change driven, world-historic heat wave is a crisis comes with an alert on everyone’s phones that doesn’t mention climate change but merely asks for alertness against starting fires. 🔥 A 'cones hotline’ style of emergency response.

The Rod Liddle biography suggests a certain post-1968 'type' who was just idiotically drawn to norm-breaching, moving via adolescent rebellion, punk, revolutionary socialism, and eventually ending up at racism, because by the 21st century that was the most efficient transgression still on offer

Approval of east London datacentre labelled ‘slap in the face’ for local democracy. Datacentre prioritised over building affordable homes. Little attention to environmental issues. Govt overturning local council refusal is not devolution or democracy. Big business always wins.

Also working-class autodidacts didn't just read alone - they read in groups, set up libraries and reading rooms, and battled for Mechanics' Institutes (many long ago merged into unis) to teach music, history, and politics. They built the public adult education infrastructure that's being destroyed

This misses the point. Self-education has become more accessible in the last 20 years than at any point in history, though not through ‘amateur reading’. The problem isn’t access to information but learning how to evaluate it critically - and that brings us back to universities (and Humanities)

"It’s an old story: the finger on the monkey’s paw curls, the wish is granted. It’s a good metaphor for capitalism too a machine, the workings of which are completely opaque but gives you more of what you want without ever requiring you to confront the humanity of the people affected"

Pleased to see our work on Popular Asset Commissions included in the @greensorganise.bsky.social pledge for the upcoming elections. We need a new approach to local government if we’re to escape the austerity trap that 40 years of neoliberal reform has placed us in.

Excl: Around 200 Green councillors and candidates have signed a pledge promising to “oppose austerity” in local government ahead of 7 May.

A lot wrong in the world today, but can we all congratulate 84 year old British wrestling legend Kendo Nagasaki who has described Nigel Farage as: "a really hateful man ...got this terrible history of racial and right wing abuse - and still doing it to this day, but now he camouflages it a little."
