This footage shot by a tourist aboard Jacksonville Boat Charters near Amelia Island, Florida shows a leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). At 2000 lbs (900 kg) & 7 ft long (2.1 m) they're the largest turtles & indeed one of the heaviest extant reptiles on Earth. Here There Be Monsters!

1) This rules 2) Your dad annoying you so profoundly that you drew 478 fish is the most relatable thing I have ever seen.

HulloThere@jethroreading32.bsky.social

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

On Tues Oct 27th, Philly will have gone a full month without access to the Academy of Natural Sciences. Join us at academy at 6pm for a candlelight vigil. We’re keeping the light of hope alive. Wear black if you have it. We’re the dark times, but this fight isn’t over.

Another older Halloween comic. I lost the old file so I recently had to redraw it, and I had a lot of fun revisiting this.

In two weeks, head to Georgetown University for an evening program: Birds and the Power of People: A Celebration of Science, Art, and Conservation! Through art, conversation, and demonstrations, explore how collective effort gives us genuine reason for hope about the future of migratory birds.

I'm at the car dealership waiting for my car to be serviced and I got a jump scare seeing L. Ron Hubbard's book, just chilling with other books for people waiting. Makes me think about his #behindthebastards episode. @iwriteok.bsky.social

#SaveTheAcademy of Natural Sciences and reopen its public museum! It holds one of the largest collections of South American freshwater fishes in the world including type specimens that I and my peers described and entrusted the museum to curate for perpetuity. @acadnatsci @savetheacademy @drexeluniv

We have sycamore, horse chestnut, and pine trees on our street and my daughter likes collecting the seeds on our walk to school so we have a box full now. Just missing some acorns! We tried planting a few horse chestnuts in a pot, but I think a squirrel dug them up. #kidlitart #autumn

A month and a half into my oceanography masters and it is interesting how I see these videos differently. I notice the water clarity and how it means few nutrients in the water, the temp is around 4°C which is what the bottom temp is around basically the whole world, the salinity seems a little low?

Sorry for the weird sidebar. This site isn't made for mobile. This is the Slocum glider fighting the current to try to get to it's waypoint in this Nor'easter. They are buoyancy driven so not going very fast.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

And the answer, as best we can tell is: they have no idea they're as sparkly as a prom dress. The iridescence is a structural color, a natural consequence of stacking layers of chitin on their plates ('elytra') to sufficient thickness to be protective. What horrors are they protecting against?

I knit this sweater when my best girl Angel was getting older and couldn't stay as warm. 12 years later as it gets cooler our new dog Willow tries it on for size. #handknit #dogsofbluesky

People say "what's wrong with Windows?" when I refuse to use it. Well today I had Microsoft word open in windows just looking at a small document and it crashed. That's my problem.

Treating this as an unstoppable race, and accepting the "endgame" of runaway warming, is a reckless gamble that should never be decided in a boardroom alone. Betting on future carbon removal to fix today's emissions requires far more confidence than the evidence supports.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

For the first time in over 30 years, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern cod stock has been deemed “healthy” by Ottawa. www.canadianaffairs.news/2026/09/05/i...
