It's important to savour the good things in life. Beverages, pies, companies making it clear "No, we don't want you slop around here", warm blankets, cold pillows.

I had a huge smile on my face the whole time I was reading this. It made me feel like I was there... again! Thanks, Maxim!

I finally got around to writing my recap of Between Two Cons! Which ruled. This is the first post on my new blog, too! It includes pictures from the weekend, some favorite moments, and summaries of the games I played. More detailed play reports to come. blog.maximlowe.com/between-two-...

I wanna tell you about Between Two Cons (June 26-27, in Portland) because it was such a fabulous experience. It was unique among the cons I've been to, and I heard that from all the attendees I talked to. Please enjoy these random thoughts...

At the end of the weekend, after the final Between Two Cairns podcast recording, we all wandered out into the street, not sure how to leave. People lingered on the corners for a while. We asked "Where are you off to?" and "Will you be here if they do it again next year?" Nobody wanted it to be over.

The game rooms each had a table of available snacks – granola bars, bananas, etc. They brought in doughnuts in the morning and pizza in the late afternoon. Amazing! Brilliant! And there were people walking around the game tables offering bottles of water. What?! So thoughtful!!

Perhaps my favorite comment was this one, from Dom Fortunato  – "It's wild to be at a con where every player is a baller and every GM/ref can and will dunk. You can really tell that everyone is into it." Yes, that's exactly what it felt like.

I played a Mausritter hack called Mud + Lasers by @bad-quail.itch.io. "A military sci-fantasy hex crawl inspired by the Mimban bits of Solo: a Star Wars Story. Unwilling conscripts fight and die on the front lines ... a desperate few plan their escape." Pretty great! And the lore was DEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

The place had a ton of character, with murals and art and artifacts, many of which were thematically appropriate. It would be hard to imagine a better place for a con that size. (And they had a Dreamcast set up in one room!)

The Norse Hall was an ideal venue. (www.grieglodge.org) A bunch of small, cozy rooms. There was one crowded room (The Dining Hall) but most of them were quiet and had lots of space between tables. There were lots of nooks and crannies where you could chill out and get a break from the crowds.

this graduation speech moment is notable, and her amazed shock at having failed to read the room feels instructive. when you're inside the bubble, you think everybody else is. but everybody isn't.

I'm back from North Star gaming convention and it was great fun. 😁 Here are some GM tips, which are not new, but bare repeating: You are the independent arbiter of the game, welcome ideas and support for the players. Remember you're all responsible for the fun, so devolve that responsibility 1/
