Political scientist at Johns Hopkins University: democracy, inequality, political psychology, public opinion, behavioral everything. No relation. American by way of Estonia, Sweden, and England.
A year ago, @propublica.org told you immigration agents had detained more than 170 U.S. citizens.
We’ve updated our count, and we’ve got all the receipts.
The tally: At least 506 citizens detained. Sometimes held at gunpoint, handcuffed, or even deported.

Lucan Way and I have been writing about competitive authoritarianism for more than 25 years. We never thought we'd write this piece.

Americans have never been angrier with one another. But polarization is not the disease—it is the response to a revanchist movement seeking to roll back sixty years of social progress.

NYT publishing Nikole Hannah-Jones' essay on the individually insurmountable difficulties of a segregated school system last week, only to now release this heavy-lift, consulted-many-experts, deep dive into what can improve schools that does not mention the word integration.
I would add to this that the whole point of an academic publications is that they are supposed to be records of things you have learned through careful scholarship. If they contain non-existent references, they are a misrepresentation of what is assumed to be the process behind the product.
This came on my timeline without context and wow, the blood pressure spike when I got to the second sentence… had me in the first half etc.
anyway yes it is fraud.
“Why do political scientists all dress so badly and recognizably” I think, as I walk down the street in Boston and get visibly identified as a political scientist by fellow APSA-goers
The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking.
An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times.
The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.
For the past six months @mariaa.bsky.social and I have been working on creating an improved research experience on atproto. It's now live! Check out: lea.ac
More than 500 scholars agree:
"We write to urge Congress to do what most democracies have already done: adopt proportional representation."
proud to be among them.

"Across countries & within the US, the same relationship appears: In places of concentrated wealth, individuals’ willingness to help others and engage in volunteerism tends to decrease." Important work by @schechtlm.eurosky.social & colleagues in @contexts.org. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
"Either way, the concentration of wealth at the very top is much higher now than it ever was during the Gilded Age. And these are numbers from last year, before the SpaceX IPO. The robber barons were pikers compared with today’s oligarchs." paulkrugman.substack.com/p/meet-the-n...
Ten points if you guessed "tsarist regime in Russia in 1905". From the Revolutions podcast, s10e36. (Episode aired in 2020, so the similarity to, uh, current events may be somewhat intentional - but still.)

Moon content is the wholesome content I did not know I needed. With all the sudden swings of dopamine I crave (Nutella! Wife who died!) but none of the bomb threats.
Thrilled that my paper (w/@sarahobolt.bsky.social,@catherinedevries.bsky.social,@simonecremaschi.bsky.social) was accepted at the American Political Science Review!
We find that declining public services fuel support for the populist right — and show why the right benefits more than other parties 🧵
Had a lovely conversation about my book with Miranda Melcher of @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social! Take a listen for a preview of the book’s arguments about company power, state capacity, and public alienation in mining towns: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/n...
Because I am a survey researcher, I usually take most surveys that I am asked to participate in. But I am reaching saturation on surveys about AI use in academia... how many teams are out there working on this? Everyone?
The pace at which US wealth concentration is rising is simply staggering
The concentration of AI wealth into the hands of a few tech barons + plutocratic capture ==> unchartered territory
I have a new paper. We look at ~all stats articles in political science post-2010 & show that 94% have abstracts that claim to reject a null. Only 2% present only null results. This is hard to explain unless the research process has a filter that only lets rejections through.
Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump — 3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.
This law group led by @rickpildes.bsky.social had me write for their 100 Ideas series on US democracy
My idea: the rule of law cannot coexist with this level of wealth concentration. Once Musk, Bezos, Zuck, & a few others bend the knee, the authoritarian consolidates too much power
Next up in our "100 ideas" series — New by @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social — "Extreme Wealth Inequality Destroys Constitutions"

For the second year in a row, the wealth gains for the 100 richest Americans exceeded what ALL American households spent on groceries combined.
~$995B for billionaires vs ~$775B in total grocery spending.
We have an oligarchy and inequality problem masquerading as an affordability crisis.
In our research on socioeconomic background in academia, we ran a survey. Over 2,000 faculty members responded (thanks if you were one!)
Social & cultural capital showed up time and again as key issues.
A few findings you might be interested in...🧵
❓ What do people’s own words reveal about their economic decisions?
A new JEL article by Ingar Haaland, Christopher Roth, Stefanie Stantcheva and Johannes Wohlfart shows how open-ended survey responses offer insights that standard surveys often miss.

Those claiming Dems should retreat on racial justice aren't hard-headed realists, they're pushing against the electoral tide rather than leaning into it. The story of Gen Z isn't about racist backlash or red-pilled young men. It's the most racially progressive generation in American history. 🧵
🚨Elites often warn: taxing the rich hurts everyone.
🤔But do citizens buy that story?
With @bcastanho.bsky.social & Hanna Lierse, we find: They don’t! Most people believe progressive taxes can deliver both — more equality and more growth. @jpublicpolicy.bsky.social#openaccesscup.org/3JVuvHm
“Deciding to Win' also displays little awareness of what winning elections is for. There is an obvious reason why the Democratic Party ought not abandon its commitment to preventing the climate crisis," writes @davekarpf.bsky.social. Excellent piece. newrepublic.com/article/2023...

Here is a very niche sign of how far the US has fallen.
If you attend a political science conference today, you will hear scholars stumbling over how to introduce datasets that until last year were known as describing "wealthy industrialized democracies".
Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.
NEWS: ICE gave a Rogers Park man a $130 ticket for not having his papers on him. They rounded him up last week and eventually let him go, but not without a fine that some critics say is un-American. Trump admin enforcing little-used law

@dpzollinger.bsky.social and I are thrilled "Cleavage Politics in Western Democracies" is out as an SI at @wepsocial.bsky.social!
Its papers explore the foundations of the cleavage pitting new left against radical right parties, and how it compares to the classic cleavages of Lipset & Rokkan:

Really excited that after several years of working on it, revising, and getting lots of rejections, our paper (w/ Rune Stubager & Mads Thau) on citizens’ responses to group appeals is *finally* out @ejprjournal.bsky.socialwww.cambridge.org/core/journal...
