The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either: 1) Like the fascism 2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy 3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning. The force is out of balance. They are viscerally eager to go after Dems about something.

You can argue the distinctions don’t matter, but it seems relevant that Larry Page was an actually-smart grad student who turned real research into a trillion-dollar company, while Musk was a middling student who couldn’t cut grad school and made a career of stealing credit from actual researchers.

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

Left unmentioned is that this was a philosophical argument they got into at a party, probably on a lot of drugs, in which Page made Musk look dumb and then Musk got all mad about it. These are less serious people than the text would lead you to believe.

A lot of Musk lore is well-enough-known that you can read something into a writer’s choice of how they characterize it. Roose tells us that Musk helped launch OpenAI because he was concerned that Larry Page had radical beliefs about digital life replacing humanity. That’s Musk’s narrative. (…)

Michael Clanchy told people over 50 years ago not to fetishize writing, but he would not diminish the significance of writing today because he knew well that it now equates to power and to eschew it is to disempower one's self. I mention this bc we are seeing the emergence of an arch stance on GenAI

Sonja Drimmer@sonjadrimmer.bsky.social

One of the annoying effects of AI as a subject in higher ed is how much it brings out the worst of academic-brain. Like, yes, writing is not essential to higher-order thinking; western imperialists imposed literacy as a weapon and deemed cultures lacking alphabetic writing as inferior. It’s true!

Roose does a very nice job signaling in the second paragraph what sort of book this will be. He decided to write it the night after partying with ketamine-snorting effective accelerationists. He isn’t e/acc himself, but he hangs with that crowd and accepts their premises as newsworthy,

Page 5. This is also the type of book that takes Amanda Askell completely seriously. I am not sure I can do that, personally. But I will try my best. (IYKYK)

(Still page 5) “Today, it’s clear not only that AGI is possible but also that, in some sense, the hard part is already done.” 🤯😡 Okay, so the problem for me here is that my book pub date is 2.5 months from now. And the thesis of my book is (basically) “no it fucking is not. See: history.”

That is a very distinct type of book. I expect it’ll tell me things about Bay-area AI circles that I don’t already know (because I’m not there, and I don’t run in those circles). I also expect it’ll project their confidence while leaving it unchallenged, in ways that frittata the hell out of me.

HOT TAKE: if you are sitting on the metro, and see a bunch of people wearing marathon medals board your car, and you DONT immediately give up your seat? That definitely makes you a bad person.

(In case that joke doesn’t translate: the first 5 miles or so is VA to DC. Easy run. Next 13 is in DC. Good run, getting tougher. -final 8 is in VA. Your body is shattered at that point.)

Here’s how I would narrate the Marine Corps Marathon course: -You start the morning to Virginia. Inauspicious beginning. -your first task is to run back to DC. This is good and makes sense. -then you run around DC. Lovely. -but then they send you BACK to Burginia. Mistake. Everything hurts.

Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.

It strikes me that Yglesias just has no concept of non-electoral politics whatsoever. He has a set of cookie-cutter advice for political candidates in general elections. He applies this advice to literally everyone all the time. This is dumb for obvious reasons that are hard to miss.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

And now the media heavyweights weigh in. @danagoldstein.bsky.social does a thorough job reporting on the ed-tech ambitions of Alpha School, and whether existing claims about its effectiveness withstand scrutiny (answer: no). Appreciate the nod to my reporting on the boot camp too. But...

nytimes.comAlpha School Claims to Teach Kids Twice as Fast. Many Don’t Make It. (Gift Article)Alpha School, a private network, is spreading into public education. While its students’ test scores are high, some parents and educators say it doesn’t live up to the hype.

As I've dug into this story, I've realized Alpha is just part of a larger terminally online ecosystem that has abandoned public schooling as something worth preserving. That in my view is the big story here, Alpha may live or die, but the Silicon Valley intellectual ecosystem will endure.

He’s gonna end up over half a billion. And that’s not counting the in-kind contributions from the media platform he owns.

Palmer Luckey is just a doughy, oafish Bond villain.
