I would 100% buy Rick Steves' guide to Westeros.

Every movie, song, and book that you love was made without the technology that people who don’t make art are now insisting is necessary for making art.

Excellent advice for life in general here. Don’t be someone’s hype man if you don’t understand what they’re hyping! 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

So the next time someone who is not an expert in the field concerned loses their mind over some supposedly revolutionary finding…bear this in mind. Whether this has to do with AI or not, it’s just a good rule of thumb. Don’t be someone else’s hype man if you don’t understand what you’re hyping.

I will never forget the first time I stepped into Chris Wickham’s office as a PhD student in 2007 and saw his Buffy the Vampire Slayer mousepad. We hit it off immediately. He was such a kind, generous scholar in addition to being brilliant. Medieval studies is the poorer for his absence.

Good advice for journalists covering the story too 👇

#MedievalSky In case your students this week come in w/ questions about the Russian plague case currently in the news, you can tell them: 1) if this is plague (Yersinia pestis), there is nothing unusual about it (a) being in Russia or (b) being the subject of lab research. Plague is worldwide.

From the article: “The thing we don't hear about enough, in my opinion, is the lives and humanity of pregnant people.” 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 In Judaism, the fetus is regarded as a part of the pregnant person's body until birth. Because whose life matters most is the one already born.

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Dozens of gas-burning power plants are being built across the country, solely to power data centers. These plants could emit as much planet-warming pollution as half of all passenger vehicles in the entire country in a single YEAR. We need a data center moratorium — now.

kids should know how to type, yes. but i am telling you as a teacher, this is BROADLY not the reason kids are using ChatGPT. They use it for the same reason adults do: because it's a shortcut and they don't see the value of the work they are being asked to do or the skill underlying it.

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵

The first time I tried chèvre from Rocamadour, my brain short-circuited. But then I remember the first time I had buffalo mozzarella in Parma…or my first poutine at La Banquise…I just really love cheese.

People on Bluesky sigh and talk about The Discourse as if it were something required of them instead of something they opt to partake in, day in and day out. You really don't have to. Post about your favorite cheese

To be clear, I'm sorry for everyone who travelled and didn't get to see it, but the fact that safety issues with pyrotechnics caused the Royal #Shakespeare Company #MadKing show to be delayed is far too thematically apt for a play about King Aerys II Targaryen. ...also it sounds like a great show.

Still working on my recap of #HouseoftheDragon S03E03, but here's a taste: It's a fantastic exercise in low-key domestic horror. There are rats skittering along the edges of so many shots, their claws constant in the background, even before they become the main course.

Rhaenyra keeps looking over her shoulder, sometimes seeing what’s there and sometimes not, her growing paranoia only exacerbated by her insomnia. She’s killed now, with her own hands. Sleep no more, Rhaenyra shall sleep no more.
