ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

"cookie consent banners on every website" is such a nightmarish and legislator-brained way to go about protecting user privacy. there are solutions which aren't this annoying.

there's something miraculous about a 110-year old typeface which still feels contemporary (somehow!) and something special about old fonts which have human quirks and imperfections that newer, "cleaner" typefaces do not. something full of life fontsinuse.com/typefaces/95...

fonts4ever.com definitely looks like a site that would give me malware and not a legitimate storefront for a type foundry

there was a digitization by Scangraphic made some time in the 1980s, Venus SB and Venus SH. Scangraphic appears to no longer exist(?), and its catalogue was taken over by by Elsner+Flake, who used to sell their fonts via MyFonts (but not now!) and their own site, fonts4ever.com (but not any more!)

when you post and belatedly realize you used the same word twice in one post 😔

building a new website and I'm enjoying taking a content-first approach to building. at first, write as little CSS as possible; rely on browser defaults for almost everything. focus on the content. only move onto styling once you have a site that is semantic, accessible, and performant.

I see a lot of people begin with visuals and then try to reverse-engineer content to fit the aesthetic they have created. things fall into place much more naturally when you're using visuals to enhance what's already being said well

This reads like a strong, brief @alistapart.com article. Possibly because ALA’s former editor-in-chief (and a former lead of The Web Standards Project) wrote it. Aaron’s work is always good.

How many of these papers will be retracted before all is said and done? How much time will actual mathematicians have to waste sifting through slop to make sense of any meaningful discoveries? Is it worth the cost?

OpenAI’s findings have arrived in increasingly large waves, with little pause between them and frequent indications from the company that yet more are on the way. “You get a sense that they don’t really care about these individual results,” Roney-Dougal said. “It’s a really nasty feeling.”

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

We bullied a bunch of vulnerable kids back into the closet with threats of explicit violence and parental abuse. Why do they suddenly feel less secure?

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis. “It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”
