Mentoring is the most important thing most of us can do. Here is a 🧡about what I've learned as a PI running an academic research lab. I hope some of the advice is helpful to those who are just starting their labs and to folks hitting the academic job market in search of an independent position πŸ§ͺ 1/n

Working on a πŸ§ͺ Teams doc and the software seems annoyed with me continuing to hit ctrl+S. It started adding pizazz to the autosave notifications to grab my attention. The latest: "You're good to go. The document is autosaving ✌️!" I'm wondering if the next emoji will use a different finger πŸ˜…

Not sure what is going on with the algorithm over on LinkedIn, but Paul Stanley from Kiss just showed up on my feed talking about "luxury" audio πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€ This might be a sign that it's time to wrap up for the day πŸ˜†

Just in time for Halloween, we've posted a new preprint on zombie deubiquitinases! As it turns out, standard #DUB catalytic mutants aren't truly dead - they've just become zombies that are still capable of removing noncanonical, ester-linked #ubiquitin signals...

I need a better answer when asked by other birders: "What is your favorite bird?" Honest answer, sorry to say, is the mourning dove. This response always receives a perplexed look. So,my new birder-specific answer will be: Indigo bunting, green heron, or wood stork πŸͺΆ Pics taken by me in Memphis.

πŸ¦”πŸ’· Hedgehogs are minted! But what about their future? They’re heading for Britain’s banknotes, yet still need stronger protection in the wild. Let’s make them worth more than the paper they’re printed on! Read my petition update πŸ‘‡ c.org/BdXw8Rgwx2 #Hedgehogs #Wildlife

My lab started a monthly Vintage Journal Club where we read and discuss seminal papers in the field that are related to ongoing projects. It's turning out to be really fun to discuss "vintage" work in the context of what we know today. The lab seems to enjoy it too. πŸ§ͺ πŸ€“

Earlier this year the scientific community successfully fought back on dramatic changes in Federal funding proposed by the Trump Administration. Now another RFI is proposing substantial changes that would damage peer review. This letter from SDB President Helen McNeill lays out the issue clearly 1/n

Who knew that ChatGPT had good taste in music? Prompt: What is the best rock album of all time? Answer: If I had to pick one, I'd go with The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Nearly flawless sequencing and atmosphere; Huge influence on rock, progressive rock, and studio production; 🧡1/4

3/4 Abbey Road The Beatles best classic rock Exile on Main St. The Rolling Stones best gritty rock OK Computer Radiohead best alternative rock Revolver The Beatles most revolutionary Born to Run Bruce Springsteen best songwriting

4/4 If we're talking pure rock 'n' roll rather than overall artistry, though, I'd probably give the crown to Led Zeppelin I really don't have much to argue with here πŸ€“ 🎸

2/4 Exceptional songwriting & sound design; Works as a complete album, not just a collection of singles; Decades later, it still sounds remarkably modern. But the answer depends on what you mean by best: The Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd best overall; Led Zeppelin IV Led Zeppelin best hard rock

I am supposed to be writing so, of course, I am procrastinating. I asked ChatGPT about doves and it told me that mourning doves are nice to watch because: "They look like birds that have somewhere quiet to be, and they're never in much of a hurry to get there." πŸ˜„ πŸͺΆ

Please consider planting some native plants in your yard to help the pollinators 🫢 No yard? A few clover plants in a window box can make a big difference for pollinators in the city πŸ’™πŸπŸ¦‹πŸ’š

Hidden within even the world’s densest cities, connecting trees, window flowerboxes, parks and gardens, are a complex series of roads you won’t find on any map. But for our planet’s insects, they’re critical lifeways.
