1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it). But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

coming out against taco trucks is the caliber of self-imposed destruction with very few rivals. I'm thinking Pharaoh in the Book of Exodus, General Custer, Division General Leclerc. Sun Tzu wrote a whole book about not giving your opps this much to work with

LAPD Chief McDonnell's refusal to enforce the "No Secret Police Act" is no aberration. It's reflection of a vision for LAPD that is fundamentally incompatible with the reform-minded direction L.A. has been struggling toward for 50 years. mikebonin.substack.com/p/jim-mcdonn...

The federal government is afraid of your whistles and your emails.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.

"Anything less is a distraction and undermines efforts to make sure the Games truly reflect the values of a city." Now LA City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, who also sits on the city's ad hoc Olympics and Paralympics committee, is calling for LA28 chair Casey Wasserman to step down

Here's one LA elected official making a statement: “I think Casey Wasserman needs to step down,” says LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Having him represent us on the world stage distracts focus from our athletes and the enormous effort needed to prepare for 2028"

I'm surprised (or maybe not?) we aren't hearing more from LA electeds and civic leaders in the local coverage. Aside from his role as LA28 chair, Casey Wasserman is also leading Newsom's fire recovery philanthropy and is a major UCLA donor with buildings named after him on campus

We all know we have a housing crisis, but once you begin hearing about different housing solutions, things can be really confusing! Zoning, LAHSA, LACAHSA, what does it all mean?! Join us this Thursday at 6pm on Zoom to learn the ABCs of housing terminology. RSVP: www.laforward.org/events/soup

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

2026 is a BIG electoral year. Join us Tues 1/13 at 7pm - we’ll talk about the big races that are on everyone’s minds, plus the lesser-discussed elections – at all levels of government. Don’t miss our rundown of what’s on the horizon for this year! RSVP: www.laforward.org/events/mm-ja...
