It's scary dry on the PNW mountain bike trails already. In early May! This is really not good. A downhill corner that I can usually carve through was dry marbles today on my lunch ride and I paid the price.

$100 Uber to the airport from Ballard, midday in no traffic. the most expensive rideshares in the country are in Seattle. I understand the need to pay drivers better, but it's a huge cost for those of us that mostly cycle, and the transit option is an extra hour or more.

Annoyed but also pleased with myself. After our cheap electric car (BMW i3) bricked over the weekend I was able to diagnose it to the 12v battery, order one delivered today and an OBD2 reader, install it and reset code. $200 total and an hour of work. Oh, we live on an island with one car.

The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

I was so sad to hear about the death of a cyclist due to a hit-and-run on Beacon Ave. Allie was a beloved community member, avid biker, & advocate for safer transit & streets. My condolences to their family and friends. But condolences are hollow if we don’t take action to prevent the next tragedy.

"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

This should be seen as what it is: a huge step towards ending free and fair elections.

dear US friends, when a sitting president (re)builds the seat of government, it almost always means the president has no intention of leaving at the end of term. your African friends with decades of experience

I'm not sure what others saw out there today, but where I was GenZ was less than 1% of the crowds. In the rest of the world that generation is at the forefront of change, but I have not seen that in America. What's holding them back?

So.... food prices keep going up for Americans and the Chinese won't buy US soybeans because of the unnecessary trade war, and now our tax dollars (raised by tariffs) are going to bail out farmers who are growing food we don't eat? Also Argentina?!?!

300 school streets in 5 years. It is possible to make rapid change.

Paris celebrated the opening of its 300th “school street”: landscaped & pedestrianized or semi-pedestrianized blocks situated in front of schools. Most have been completed since 2020.

How AI will be used is 1000 times more scary than what we are seeing with drones.

Danish police are now labeling the drone incident at Copenhagen Airport as “an attack.” The UAVs were guided by a “capable operator” showcasing specific capabilities, approached from multiple directions, lights intermittently switching on and off before ultimately vanishing after several hours.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users. While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

So this was new. Landing in JFK this morning on a domestic flight and asked to stay seated while "customs boards the plane". Then an Arab sounding name is announced and asked to come to the front of the plane. He does and only then are we allowed to get up. This is America now.

I'm starting to think none of these people have actually been to the museums they criticize...

We are outraged and deeply distressed that armed federal agents came onto our campus—making arrests on the very ground where, in 1942, Japanese American families were forced to board buses bound for concentration camps. It was a deliberate act of provocation and intimidation.

Replying to @jamuseum.bsky.social

The parallels are stark: entire communities were forcibly removed from the West Coast in 1942 and today our immigrant brothers and sisters face the terror of ICE and CBP raids across the country. It was a miscarriage of justice then, and it is a miscarriage of justice now.
