ps. The photo of Machu Picchu above (an astounding place, but not one I write about) is to pay homage to this place, the country where my spouse was born, and also the monumental site my late Abuela would have really loved visiting.
The gorgeous patio at the Casa de Pilatos in Seville, with the Carrara marble fountain at the centre topped with an ancient Roman bust of Janus; from the Aprile workshop in Genoa.
I took this footage of the palace on a spring day a few years back.

Photos of two of the Cloisters of the Convent of San Francisco in Cusco. Originally, the convent had four cloisters of which three survive. On the left hand side the ‘Museum’ cloister and on the right a sneak pic into the Novitiate.
Love this line from the key on this painting of the Plaza of Lima.
'Margaritas nardos son' seems to be the start of a song or a stanza. A Margarita de Vara or Vara de San José is a Nardo.
My aunt used to bring them as a gift to my parents.

1/2 Quiet morning writing about Lima, momentarily interrupted by a rabbit hole. A bas-relief chiselled by Giovanni Bellini (also known as Juan Antonio de Padua, about whom little is known) of the Council of the Indies, made in 1748 for the new royal palace in Madrid.

2/2 The relief is part of a series that includes representations of other Councils, battles, allegories and more. Of the 44 pieces commissioned, 33 are in the collection. Fascinating.
The full series, including the Council of the Indies above, is found here: www.museodelprado.es/museo/public...
This was my reaction too and I don't even know whether the "we" is humanists, women, people with the ability to read, Canadians, fans of Sappho, fans of Emily Dickinson, translators, classicists, or people who appreciate the feelings of sad red monsters. Either way, yes

☕ For those following recent developments in the Red Sea @nytimes.com takes us back further in time. I got to talk about why Mokha is and is not really a coffee port and why these topics are so vital to understanding the world that we live in today.
