The electrochemical society conference is downtown and I overheard a chemist say 'I wonder if they think we're tourists.' My dude you are carrying a chemistry textbook yes we think you're not from here.
My apartment is a disaster, I had nightmares of pipes breaking and flooding it and my entire building, my work emails are piling up, and I have one week left in my candidacy exams. Everything is fine. It's all fine. Everything.
Were you bitten or scratched by a skunk in the DT/ Stanley Park area between Sept 22 and Oct 17? Then you need to talk to a doctor ASAP and be assessed for potential rabies exposure. VCH said a skunk tested positive for rabies. Anyone exposed can be given a post-exposure vaccine and stay healthy.
Day I don't even know of writing my candidacy exams. I've got one paper left to do (it's started; I'm aiming to finish today). They're all due next Friday at noon; I want to be ready to edit.
Also I keep trying and trying to silence the Lean Library popups.
I signed up to count ballots in the Alberta referendum - 7pm to 7am. It's all hand counting, so a very long night...but also a real privilege to see how our democracy works. It probably sounds corny, but I was thinking about the generations of women who were denied the vote whole I was counting.
This month The Printmakers Matrix contest theme is harvest, so I thought I would submit this print I made for my Manufactured Ecosystems art show about the future of pollinators and pollination. Every crop in my 16” x 20” linocut is one we harvest here
Voted last night at the advance polls. It's quick and easy! I can't comment much because I'm going to be counting ballots as a counting officer on election night, but can say that I'm really impressed with how many careful steps there are to preserve the integrity of the vote.
The secret is out! My hopeful* little story, "Forward", is in the "Are You Everything Alright" anthology. What if the internet went down and never came back up?
*ignore that section in the middle where the narrator lists off everyone she knows who has died recently

In the past week, I have been told by my supervisor that I should be more respectful because he's given me good program reviews, and then, in speaking with a male grad advisor about supervision changes, told it's like getting a divorce. I don't know what the actual fuck is up with men these days.
The SNL 'women dress like whores at the gym' bit just seems like par for the course - not just that he felt empowered to say it, but that people laughed. Misogyny runs so deep that it's running through EVERYTHING.

Discovering on Monday that your candidacy exams that are supposed to start on Friday haven't been scheduled because the supervisor hasn't secured the examiners is not exactly a great way to go into the second-most critical exams of your doctorate.
It was like being in a museum exhibit. I've been reading 'May We Feed the King' by Rebecca Perry so it felt especially mimetic. The commitment to the experience was pretty admirable.
I am working as a ballot counter on election night, and today I went for training and discovered that the election office has a mock polling station set up...right down to the 'I voted!' stickers!

Have been in a first aid class for two days with way too many people with main character energy and what finally shut them down was a MIME in full face paint walking by.
