PSA: Murc's Law and "F--- Democrats" is not leftist. Being intentionally wrong/ignorant is not leftist. Being a hypocrite/self-contradictory is not leftist. And "logical" means "consistent with the facts and itself" not "said what you wanted to hear".

I think anti-Dems really need to start accepting the fact the reason pro-Dem people act so bitchy all the time is that having to waste so much time having to convince people Yeah So That Bleeding Obvious Objectively Correct Thing? You Should Actually Fking Do It For Once is *insanely exhausting*.

I want to return to my thought earlier about "all rights are alienable", because that should not be taken as "get used to not having rights", but to make clear that you cannot top-down force your way into rights because your rights are always up for negotiation and you need to approach it that way.

Since if the reason your rights were taken away is because a majority of people hate you, then any attempt to force people to give you rights will just make them hate you more and thus more determined to take away your rights. Is that a horrifying thought? Yes, but unfortunately it's also true.

So you need to prepare to either have a life where you never get to do anything but continually fight and forcibly smack down everyone who would take away your rights, or you need to find a way to reduce the hate so thus they choose to no longer want to take away your rights. Welcome to humanity.

Note that this person was asked "what keeps virulently transphobic Republicans out of office" and then listed a bunch of things that are extremely unlikely to actually do that. Also the whole "I am apparently MAGA, since I am fine with the greater evil winning and no non-MAGA would think that way."

Like this. Dude, the way I want you to vote is the way the hard facts show stands the best chance of preserving civil rights. As the "for else" is not a punishment *I* will enact, but the one *you* enacted on *yourselves* by instead doing what will likely result in the removal of civil rights.

missrobin@missrobin.bsky.social

It's so funny to be like "I'm working so hard to persuade people to vote for Democrats" and then their posts are "you uppity minorities better fucking vote the way I want or else." Bro is driving away so many more people than he's persuading

And if going "hey, vote for what will preserve civil rights" drives you or anyone else away, then you're either the kind of emotionally immature [gender]child who rebels against everything just for the sake of rebelling regardless how actually good the action would be, or you hate civil rights.

I really need to put a reality check out there. If Anti-Dems can't even deal with pro-Dem people who believe in civil rights without resorting to playground bully, Antisocial Disorder, and/or Compulsive Lying Disorder shenanigans and histrionics, how the hell are they convincing the actual bigots?

Is it a "right" that can be made worth about as much as a fart on the wind because you're blocked from getting to tangibly exercise it? Congrats it's literally an alienable right. You sound like the leftist version of when 2A people claim gun freedoms are "God-given" versus in laws made by humans.

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

This is the third person today to suggest that my equality as a human and an American citizen was a gift bestowed upon me by Democrats as opposed to an unaliable condition inherent to all people.

There is no such thing as an "inalienable human right" because the idea that humans even *have* rights is a consensus reality we came up with so we could have civilization and get to exist for reasons beyond eating, screwing, and sleeping.

TL;DR: I don't like the prospect of trying to interact with current Republicans any more than you, nor like how long things will take as I'm not getting any younger, but our path out of this is changing our culture to be more leftist, not expecting leftist dictators to somehow top-down force things.

It feels abundantly clear that what a lot of leftists want Democrats to do is pass a "Even if Republicans get a majority they still can't do things" law, and refuse to accept democracy literally Does Not Work That Way while still remaining a democracy.

Can a party *slow down* what an oppositional majority can do? Sure. There's reasons why, say, Social Security and the ACA are just dented, not destroyed. But keep giving opposition power enough times and eventually they get to do enough damage to break it. Because you gave them the power to do it.

Even the Constitution isn't a salve here because while it's intentionally hard to amend our Constitution it still can be done. Essentially, if you have a situation where it's absolutely impossible for any Republican majority to change things, you have a Democratic dictatorship, not a democracy.

(In case they block: Person who was trying to claim that Democrats have "fought to keep them gone" with "them" being "LGBT rights", when any actual real LGBT person or ally would be aware of the trivially easy to verify information about Democrats passing various transgender protections.

FFS, no, dumbass, they're so sure VOTERS won't change. That we can't be trusted not to continually vote Republicans back in time and time again to wreck things outside of occasional two-year-long instances of ludicity. Dems can't magically change that. And this BS here is why they don't trust us.

Lisa Mullin@lisamullin.bsky.social

Reminder that the EU and Canada are so sure the Dems won't really change anything that they're literally spending ..hundreds.. of billions of cold hard cash to decouple economically and militarily from the US.

Clinton tried his hardest to outright make it legal for gays to serve in the military. It was the first thing he did on becoming President, and he received enormous pushback. He absolutely spent his honeymoon good will on it. I firmly believe that DADT was the best he could do.

I'm going to say this plainly & bluntly. We were never ever Fighting Democrats. It wasn't Democrats who loved Anita Bryant people! It was Republicans. It wasn't Democrats who called us sick, twisted, morally corrupt or mentally ill. It was Republicans.

Last night when I saw this, I was a little too tired to explain why I think this is bullshit. June 3, 1993, the year Evan was born, Kansas City Missouri passed an ordinance that provided workplace protections to LGBTQ+ people. I was involved in getting that ordinance passed.

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

Now, look, on a certain level there's a likelihood to this, right? We're probably going to have to spend 20 years fighting Democrats to restore what we've lost, whether that's trans rights, immigrant rights, voting rights for Southern Black communities.

It's a pedagogical example of the saying that the exception proves the rule. I could reel off a list of several specific Dem candidates who've put their foot in it on trans rights this cycle. If you asked me the same question about R candidates/electeds it'd be "... all of them? they're all bad"

TL;DR the whole reason we have this discourse is because Dems have been very resilient on trans issues in the face of extremely dedicated and very dangerous attacks so any potential cracks in the armor throw up alarm bells everywhere the correct response is making sure the crack doesn't spread

the overwhelming majority of Democrats are very good on trans policy, especially where it matters most (healthcare access and anti-discrimination) this in turn makes any given Democrat vulnerable to right-wing attacks on trans issues *because* of how unified the party is

Leftist Logician (she/her) reposted

a counterintuitive synthesis here is that it is probably a good sign that the "impending Democratic backslide on trans rights" is constantly looming elaboration below:

Because there are 10s of thousands of Democratic electeds in the United States, and you have positioned yourself directly into a media environment that is designed to find every statement a Democrat makes that is even vaguely transphobic as soon as it happens.

on the issue, because that's how comparisons work. And it's hard not to notice that the people who question that statement never seem to have in mind a different party anywhere on Earth that is better on the issue than Democrats.

So if even 0.5% of Democratic officials are transphobic, that would still be plenty of ammunition to bombard you with "Dems are evil" messaging at full volume multiple times a week. Also: even if Dems sucked on trans issues(and they don't), that wouldn't preclude them from being the best party

the thing that makes Bester work is that he truly believes he's right and he's doing the best thing for telepaths, he genuinely means it and Koenig sold the hell out of it

Well, once again, eff this timeline. Chekov was one of my TOS faves, and Koenig was so amazing as Bester on Babylon 5 that it made you both forget he wasn't a regular and retroactively wish he'd been given more to do as Chekov. We're down to just Takei and Shatner of the main TOS folks, aren't we?

FWIW because I looked it up for another post, Clinton got 78% of the LGBTQ vote, slightly higher than the 76% Obama got in ‘12 & the same as Obama ‘04. The #s for Biden are all over the place, probably due to COVID, and Harris despite her supposed awfulness & under-bussing got 82-86%

HRC winning would mean a 6-3 liberal Supreme Court, a Supreme Court that doesn’t pass Skirmetti, a Supreme Court that doesn’t let Hegseth purge trans people from the military, a Supreme Court that doesn’t let Trump strip support for trans care from Medicaid & threaten states over it etc etc etc

I always feel happy when I wade into a convo and find someone else trying to bring some stats and facts all up in it. I may like pro-Dem vibes better than anti-Dem vibes, but I like facts way better than I like any type of vibe.

Narrator correcting Evan's Russian-ordered disinformation: It was 40 years. 40 years of us voting Republicans as trifectas or obstructionism-capable split government. And it was REPUBLICANS that had to be fought all the way by DEMOCRATS to do anything good or stop bad things, as a result.

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

This post in particular is really telling. It's saying - don't expect Democrats to simply right the wrongs. What Republicans take away in 4 years you must expect to spend 20 years to restore, fighting Democrats the whole way.

And yes I am accusing people of being intentional disinfo peddlers as it is trivially easy to verify who was actually in charge of what. Most of us actually lived through all or most of it so I don't know what they're doing faking like they don't remember, and anyone else can easily look it up.

Narrator: It was REPUBLICANS who took away your rights, and REPUBLICANS who you will have to fight to get them back. Because it was Democrats who fought Republicans for my entire lifetime to give or restore what rights any of us had to begin with. Hope your Russian handler pays you well, asshole.

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

PSA: Any time someone lies out their ass I'm a transphobe, what typically happened in actual reality is someone faking trans advocacy posted factually false disinformation for their real motive of sabotaging Democrats, and I had to correct their disinformational ass.

What's also funny about the AI gaming situation is, like, gamers have no self-esteem, yo. We regularly will complain about things we allegedly hate in games, or complain about companies we allegedly hate, then... go buy them anyway. So if we gamers *actually* won't buy a thing, that thing is *bad*.
