A brief look at two very different reviews of Doctor Who by the two very different men who reviewed it for The Spectator at the turn of the 1970s. Free to read on the site, but you can always pick up a free or paid subscription while you're there. buttondown.com/cooray_smith...

Walter Koenig as Oro in the Canadian sci-fi series The Starlost. The Canadian produced show was filmed in Scarborough, and only aired for 16 episodes in 1973. Due to budget cuts and production difficulties, show creator Harlan Ellison left before the first episode aired.

The AAA industry continues on its path towards becoming SSS: sports, sequels, and shooters. And some of those games are good, sure. But when they're all that remains in the big-budget space, it's no wonder most of the interesting work these days is being created by indie studios.

Bioware has shut down. Founded in 1995 in Edmonton, it was the software studio behind iconic video game series such as Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Saudi Arabia (majority stake) and Jared Kushner (minority stake) buying Electronic Arts is one of the underrated instances of oligarchic media consolidation. Should be considered along similar lines as the Ellisons taking over Warner Bros.-Discovery or Musk taking over Twitter.

Edmonton-City Centre, you showed up, you spoke out & your voice was clear. You’re proud Canadians. You rejected the UCP’s convoluted ?s blaming newcomers, our family, friends & neighbours, for their government’s failures. And said no to wasting more time & $ picking fights with Ottawa. #abpoli

75 years since the start of Lime Grove Studio D's first sci-fi series. Much more about Stranger from Space in my book When Saturday Came, coming from Telos early next year. Meanwhile here's a video I made about it and parent show Whirligig, including some Tony Hart pictures from the novelisation:

Just finished S4 of THE DIPLOMAT, which was awesome, as ever. But you know what would be really awesome? If Netflix would simply let viewers savor, discuss and appreciate all 8 well-crafted episodes by releasing them weekly instead of making viewers speed-run through the season to avoid spoilers.

I mean, City of Death is the best, right? If you crafted a Doctor Who movie, this would basically be it. Bright, fun, funny, exotic locations, and a perfect spot for a celebrity cameo. We’re going to devour the Graham Williams era when we get to it on @lazydoctorwho.bsky.social

When certain people ultimately point fingers at Elections Alberta for the delay and missteps tonight, don't forget who underfunded and hampered EA's requests for help to make sure this would run more smoothly.

Most of the coverage tonight has been a relitigation of Alberta’s grievances. Talking to separatists whining about Trudeau, panelists whining about Trudeau…and nobody ever really trying to introduce facts to their feelings. Pathetic.

You don't have to do this, @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social. It's a choice. They want to defund you. They think you're a propaganda arm of an evil government. You will never win them over by showing them grace when they show absolutely none towards you.
