First look at Dwayne Johnson as the Chicken Man in Benny Safdie's ‘LIZARD MUSIC’. The film follows a young boy who finds a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music that opens a hidden door to the whimsical Chicken Man.

You know what doesn't get enough love? Horror short stories. From today through Halloween, I'll update this thread with Horror short story recommendations. Stuff you can read in a sitting while feeling like the shadows are watching.

I didn't read books for pleasure after grad school. Lots of informational reading, but nothing solely for the enjoyment. I restarted this old love in August and have devoured 3 books a week, nowhere close to how much I used to read. I have read every recommendation that my library has. Need more.

Over my career, I've known a good number of library workers who have admitted to quietly discarding items from the shelves for being hate speech. They're right about what those titles are, but I council people to let them be and just avoid doing any extra promotion for them.

Banned Books Week starts today! This year’s theme is: #LetBooksBe What do you think books should be? Share your answer in the comments: ✨ Let Books Be Free 🎉 Let Books Be Fun 🌎 Let Books Be Diverse 💡 Let Books Be Thought-Provoking ❤️ Let Books Be Themselves

We don't need to make some reaching argument that having certain items on the shelf is a good thing in itself. We should be able to say those titles do more harm than good, but also that a policy of broad inclusion is best...even when it does some real harm too.

I'm enjoying playing STILL WAKES THE DEEP. Nothing has given me more of a HALF-LIFE early levels vibe. You know, before Gordon Freeman turned out to be a combat prodigy. Gameplay is a bit more ALIEN: ISOLATION in character though. It's in Scottish brogue with subtitles in standard English.

There’s a lot of back and forth, like “omg can you believe this totally innocuous book got banned?” To me, that inherently sets up a category of “yeah, I totally see why that one was banned” that is useful to banners. “Why was it banned?” “Queer.” “Oh, yeah, makes sense.”

Anna Holmes@annabookwriter.bsky.social

It sure is a wild fact that recent bans have included books about puppies! It also isn’t nearly as important as convincing publishers not to stop publishing diverse titles and libraries to keep buying them.

Thinking about this deleted post. "How was I supposed to know?" needs to be treated like gun safety. We shouldn't just expect that half the kids will play with guns until they shoot someone and have a learning experience.

🧵 "Engaging with an existing trope or plot pattern, isn't about simplicity or robot formulas. It's rather about an acknowledgement of the history of your field, a constant intertextual conversation with (or against) the meanings that have built up around certain tropes.)"

Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

It's really easy to determine whether a book is appropriate for the age group: consult the publisher and professional reviews. Is it appropriate for a particular parent's view that interracial marriage is wrong for their kids to read about? Maybe not.

"No one ever asks parents about libraries and book appropriateness, they only ask librarians" is among my favorite of book banners dumbass takes

Today I learned, after much struggle, that tire pressure monitors operate relative to something close to sea level, so if you drive at around 7k ft or 2100+ meters elevation (for random example), they show as 3-4ish PSI too low.

One issue is that men who "respect women" and put women on a pedestal only mean that for the women currently on that pedestal. The precarious need to be above to not be below.

Opera was for the people. It can be for the people again.

Never been to the opera before? Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

I'm enjoying BALL x PIT from my PS Plus subscription. It's like they took the most satisfying moments from BREAKOUT style games and turned it into synthetic heroin. I'm not sure kids should be allowed to play.

It's really weird when (presumably) cis women call gender equality a single issue that should be given up for the greater good.

I swear to God if people don’t vote for Talarico because of this trans issue, I’m gonna be so fucking pissed off. Quit being one-issue fucking voters. maybe think about what YOU can do for your country for a fucking minute. you don’t get your way, so you sabotage your allies? How very MAGA.

No one can say a word about the writing in the RESIDENT EVIL movie, unless they want to say it needs to be much worse to match the games. I've played like 8 of them if we don't count remakes and they're all incredibly stupid. The ~atmosphere~ is why I kept playing.

You don't have to say "from the river to the sea" to say "Free Palestine" and you don't have to say "Free Palestine" to say Israel is committing genocide on Gaza But if you just say the situation is bad, that's indistinguishable from being upset that you have to hear about upsetting things.
