So, since this whole conversation came up on bsky again I will use it as a jumping off point to talk about something that's been bothering me for a bit. And it's a thing nothing really can be done about, because it's just a thing that happens.

trying to get only these specifics across, without being able to communicate what those specifics are, since you are always inside language when talking. (there is a whole thing about asemiotics here that I'm just gonna skip, also a whole thing about the subject-that-speaks that I'm gonna skip)

Anyway, I think this problematic is one of the reasons some people start interactions that are way out of line and they don't even see it. And you, as the person with whom people interact, can hardly do all that much about it (without upsetting people, which sometimes is the right thing to do).

If Sartha says that she doesn't want the abuse, how would people in-universe react? So she gets more, even if her posting about it was the honest emotion of the person behind the screen. In communication complexity, sadly, is always your job.

Because the things that are said and the symbols that are used are always different from what they were intended to mean. They exist in a network of meanings, in a language that no one owns and are used by people who cut out certain parts of the meaning of things in their mind,

Because they both approach abuse and trauma from fundamentally different positions and so the types of interactions that get opened up and closed are very different. Of course, that is a problem, that can be taken care of via communication. But that only works in private, one on one.

The reason for that is, that, as soon as you are a character online, as soon as you pick up certain signifiers, people who are not used to or conscious of reading a single person in multiple ways won't get, that you are more than the representation of that one thing.

And that's not necessarily a problem. I'm not gonna say someones puppyplay is evil and immoral because they are using Hounds "wrong". That's not how language works. But it leads to a scenario where people, who are not conscious of the context that the sign originated from,

treat people that pick that sign up in a very strange way. You get people for whom Hound is a place of solace because they read it as a chance to let go of the burden that subjectivity and/or personhood can be. Some see it as a purely kink thing, as a clear S/M thing. And there already is conflict.

What can't get transfered is the demand of that thing to be read in a specific way. For example that the type of subjectivity a Hound represents in mechsploitation, like Sartha in Warhound for example, is horrific. This is horror.

But once Sartha as a symbolic thing reaches a state of memetic universality, it will no longer be used as such. At least not by everyone. And that leads to a lot of different variations. That's why you have a mechsplo community on tumblr for example that's basically puppyplay with different names.

So you end up communicating a watered down version. Now, the way it gets watered down can be influenced to a certain extend. Things - objects, people or concepts - that we get from Art and that enter circulation are always reduced to the aspects that can be detached from their specific context.

Otherwise them entering new contexts, being used and reused where different shapes would be needed, would be impossible. But by taking out a part of a machinery that produced certain effects and putting it into a new one it will also end up producing different effects.

When a piece of art escapes the containment that is a book for example, some things will become degraded versions of themselves by necessity. That is because of the way communication works. You can not transfer identical intensities, those are not things that exist.
