‘Wicker’ stars Alexander Skarsgård as a man made entirely of wicker, complete with a rock-hard wicker dick. But what about splinters? Bacteria? Degradation? Would it be advisable, from a sexual-health perspective, to mount a basket dick? We asked a gynecologist: vulture.visitlink.me/DNQwX5

the main characters of the new book -- codename: WRECK -- are on again off again boyfriends/rivals, so the toxic yaoi is finally coming to bear after two books of trans/sapphic situationships

This week's @fansplaining.bsky.social feature is a thorny, fascinating one: @kalaichik.bsky.social reports on the complicated tensions within global danmei fandom, where domestic threats to writers make the stakes feel higher for international fans—and translators wind up on the front lines:

fansplaining.comThe Growing Pains of Global Danmei FandomAs danmei's popularity skyrockets outside China, translators are getting caught in the crosshairs.

Finished Pasha the Storm by extremely good human @lincodega.com yesterday. Brilliantly funny, smart, horny story about pirates, the stories they tell about themselves and who's actually writing them. (Link is for bookshop.org. Other vendors work better for you) uk.bookshop.org/p/books/pash...

the most shocking thing about You Can See Everything is the apparently deliberate withholding of the fact that BILLY EVANS AND ELIZABETH HOLMES ARE NOT MARRIED.

i don't want to say anything else or iterate any opinions on this fact, but!! Very Fucking Telling!! VERY IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER after watching the film!! perhaps important to know before going into the film!!!

the most shocking thing about You Can See Everything is the apparently deliberate withholding of the fact that BILLY EVANS AND ELIZABETH HOLMES ARE NOT MARRIED.

this was likely done to protect his assets considering she owes millions of dollars to the investors she defrauded and he's got trust fund money, but still... STILL

at the very least the doc didn't mention that they weren't married, or that they were only engaged, or anything like that. just kind of breezed through the fact that they are just... long term intimate partners.

Me and the woman I sat next to while watching You Can See Everything just had a spiritual bond as we simultaneously gasped, covered our faces and laughed nervously throughout the entire movie experience

The over/underversary made me reread the first couple entries in my play by day diary and whew what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck

One year ago, today Rascal @lincodega.com joined #over/under, a play-by-post @mothership.bsky.social-inspired megagame. What was supposed to be a board control game turned into one of the most intense roleplaying experiences of their life. And they kept a diary of every day.

For Fansplaining I wrote about Jane Austen fic, aka JAFF, and how a moderating decision 30 years ago set the tone for an entire fan culture of genre-shaming and gatekeeping around content. Also don't forget Fansplaining is currently having a six-month sale with 50% off! Subscribe, read, and share!

Elizabeth Minkel@elizabethminkel.bsky.social

Folks who look at fic often treat the big archives as wholly representative, but there are so many subcultures within our subculture. @bookshop.bsky.social reports a fascinating story about rigid content moderation, self-publishing, and what happens when the wide-open spaces of fic are constrained:

nobody -- not even me -- is fully prepared for the kind of person i'm going to be once i get my ass in a Wicker seat

finally upgraded my mechanical keyboard and the new clicky clackys are infinitely more satisfying than the previously clicky clacks, additionally: this one lights up. :)))

Recaps! Reported pieces! Personal essays! Smart writing about fandom, by folks who've been in the trenches for decades.

This month, we're celebrating the first six months the new and expanded Fansplaining! 🎉🎉🎉 In honor of this milestone, we're having a BIG SALE: 50% off subscriptions for your first six months at our Supporter or Benefactor tiers. If you've been thinking about becoming a subscriber, now is the time!

Gav's analysis of this show within broader corporate machinations is so smart. I get exceedingly frustrated when critics assess franchise media with a patronizing "this kind of thing will never be meaningful so it's great for what it is." The terms of 'success' might differ, but they still...exist.

In her analysis of finale, @gavia.bsky.social assesses what Lanterns might look like after the WBD-Paramount merger. "It’s weird and dispiriting to consider the possibility that Lanterns, a largely middle-of-the-road drama, might well be considered edgy a couple of years from now." Read or listen:

It's actually insane that people who work for these big companies cant own the work they make while they're not on the clock. An imagination-based company town

The folks who create Dungeons & Dragons and Magic The Gathering are unionizing with @uwotc-official.bsky.social and they have identified a new pain point -- the inability to own the work they create off the clock.

Times editor grudgingly offered a comment that amounted to "run along, peon. We're the Times."

Elizabeth Minkel@elizabethminkel.bsky.social

WELL. If you wondered why I had zero things to say about the NYT piece on the HR AI fic situation last month...I had zero things to say publicly then. 🥲 Thank you to everyone who discussed this situation with me and read a draft of this. I tried my best to illustrate these longstanding dynamics:

Pokémon fangames, like licensed projects, aren't the result of one person and the communities of volunteer developers, writers, and artists show that some people really are just in it for the love of the game.

Ana Diaz@pokachee.bsky.social

New from me: I did a deep dive and spoke to Pokemon fan game creators for @fansplaining.bsky.social. This was so hard to source, but I am humbled by the sources who took the time to talk to me about this super massive, and relatively under-examined, fandom. fansplaining.com/pokemon-fang...

The Astarion prequel novel comes out next week, and I got a chance to sit down with @tkingfisher.com to chat about the book, Baldur's Gate 3, working within a massive IP, and how she balanced comedy, tragedy, and whimsy. Also paladins. So... so many paladins.
